Position Summary

Maintain City Parks and related properties. Provide citizens with clean, safe and well cared recreational facilities. Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks on grounds, equipment, facilities, parks and other assigned areas. Employee may also assist in other Departments as assigned by supervisor.


Applicants will be considered for our Park Worker I or Park Worker II position depending on experience.


Starting Pay: $21.56 - $23.32 per hour; additional pay depending on experience

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Schedule: Full-time, 40 hours per week

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform mowing, weeding, spraying and fertilizing of turf areas.
  • Perform repair and construction of irrigation systems.
  • Perform tree trimming, spraying, fertilizing, and general care.
  • Perform maintenance duties on physical facilities such as: pavilions, restrooms, score towers, fences, fountains, picnic tables, benches, and playgrounds.
  • Perform maintenance duties on power equipment, trailers, trucks, shops, storage areas, and any other equipment used in the operation and maintenance of parks.
  • Assist in directing the summer workers and crews.
  • Lift, carry, travel and climb ladders.
  • Enter and exit underground vaults.
  • Perform snow removal duties, including clearing of walks with shovels and/or snow blowers, applying salt and/or ice melt, and clearing of city owned parking lots with snowplows.
  • Operate machinery, mowers, trucks, backhoes, etc.
  • Use a variety of hand tools, including shovels, rakes, wrenches, etc.
  • Must be able to push and pull 50 lbs., and lift 50 lbs. to shoulder height repeatedly.
  • Maintain general housekeeping in park maintenance area. Including sweeping, cleaning floors, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

In addition, Park Worker II:

  • Acts in the stead of Parks Superintendent as assigned.
  • Assist in the development of budgets and prioritizing Parks and grounds needs. Assist in coordinating landscape maintenance and construction duties.
  • Responds to or causes response to emergency calls on a 24-hour basis.
  • Maintain general housekeeping in park maintenance area. Including sweeping, cleaning floors, etc.


Supervisory Responsibilities

Exercises supervision over summer workers and crews as assigned.

Requirements

Education and/or Experience

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years experience in a combination of the following; parks, grounds maintenance, landscaping, construction, industrial setting, and/or equivalent experience.
  • In addition, Park Worker II: Minimum of five (5) years experience in Parks or Grounds Maintenance and/or equivalent experience in construction or industrial settings is required. OR Minimum of three years experience in Park Worker I position.

Language Skills

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing.

Mathematical Skills

  • Must be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide, also should be able to perform some geometric calculations.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Valid Utah driver's license or the ability to obtain one.
  • In addition, Park Worker II:
  • Possess a valid Utah Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL), or be able to obtain one within six months.
  • Must have a total of at least two separate certifications relating to job: Forklift Operator, Loader Operator, Backhoe Operator, Pesticide Applicator, Playground Inspector, Certified Nurseryman, Certified Arborist, Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor, Certified Backflow Technician, Sports Field Managers Certification, or others as approved.

This position is frequently subject to extreme weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow and wind. Frequent exposure to dust, fumes and dirty conditions as is typical of a shop and park environment. Employee will be subject to moderate noise levels and exposure to moderate physical hazards in performing projects and in maintenance work. Also, exposure to intermittent stress due to human behavior and job tasks may be experienced. Employee will need to be on his/her feet and walking for extended periods. This job will sometimes require lying on back or stomach, and working with hands above head for extended periods.
