Park Naturalist - Mount Rainier Nature Center

The Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation, Natural and Historical Resources Division, is currently seeking Seasonal/Intermittent applicants to fill ParkNaturalistpositions at Mount Rainier Nature Center.

This is a seasonal/intermittent position that requires roughly 20-30 hours per week. Work hours may vary depending on season.

This position pays at a rate of $16.00 per hour to $20.00 per hour depending on experience and qualifications.

  • Maintain current landscaped areas of Nature Center grounds

  • Assist in design of new pollinator garden areas

  • Help maintain relationships with partner organizations

  • Provide care for animals and prepare them to perform during programs and outreach events.

  • Provide customer service and safeguard the facilities during rental hours.

  • Provide interpretive and educational programs in natural history to various groups such as schools, scouts, public and summer youth campers.

  • Respond to visitor, telephone, and staff inquiries concerning natural history and conservation matters.

  • Greets visitors, provides interpretive program information, promotes positive public relations for the nature center programs and encourages public appreciation for the natural environment.

  • Assist in the design and promotion of advertising materials for the center and its program

Minimum Qualifications
College degree in appropriate field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates the applicant's ability to be responsible for a program and/or facility under a minimum amount of supervision.

Preferred Candidates will possess:
  • Experience working with children
  • Fluency in both English and Spanish
  • Garden design and maintenance experience desired
  • Maryland Natural History knowledge
  • Able to lift around 50 pounds and complete manual labor outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Superior communication skills; outgoing and friendly
  • Able to be responsible of rentals of the facility and stay after hours
  • Organizational ability
  • Team player
  • Experience in creating and conducting environmental education lessons is a plus
  • Experience working with and care of captive live animals (reptiles, mammals, amphibians and invertebrates) is a plus
  • CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain one
  • Valid driver's license
