Assists the Workers’ Compensation Commission Legal Department with legal research; draft legal memoranda, letters, briefs, discovery requests, and other legal documents; internal and external case litigation file management to include the production and organization of evidence for Rule to Show Cause files; and responding to FOIA requests and Commission file subpoenas;
- Prepare drafts of letters, briefs, discovery requests, settlement agreements, and other legal instruments. Reviews and summarizes legal documents and pleadings.
- Manage the Legal Department's Rule to Show Cause Hearing process for non-compliant employers and carriers. Ensures case files are accurate, thoroughly documented, and well-organized. Reviews carrier fines and works and assists the General Counsel with proper prosecution and resolution. Works with process servers to ensure proper service of hearing notices.
- Monitor and document expenses incurred or approved by the Legal Department.
- Receive, docket, and monitor subpoenas for the production of Commission records and assist with the production of records. Monitor agency FOIA requests and assists with document production.
- Assist counsel with information privacy and security compliance.
A high school diploma and experience in providing administrative support for an attorney(s) or a legal office.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, policies, and organizational functions. Knowledge of legal research techniques and legal database software. Knowledge of legal communication principles and practices. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to perform legal research in accordance with preliminary instructions as to methods or approach, source material available, and policy and precedent of the office.
1-3 years of paralegal experience in a high-volume litigation practice preferred.
Certification from an accredited school as a paralegal is preferred.
