Under the immediate supervision of an assigned supervisor and general direction of a classroom teacher, specialist or therapist, assists in providing academic, behavior and social-emotional supports to individual or small groups of students to enhance learning. Monitors and reports student progress according to state standards, classroom objectives and the individualized education program (IEP), including health and/or behavioral plans. Assists students in developing various self-help skills, including hygiene, toileting, eating, social, community and leisure/recreational skills. Provides non-intrusive medical health assistance and/or emergency specialized medical support.

Assignments within this job classification may be allocated across various general education and special education programs within the District, including mild/moderate classroom environments. Advancement to level III requires more advanced knowledge, skill, and ability to work with special student populations or in specially recognized skill areas. NCPI (Non-Violent Crisis Intervention), First Aid and CPR certifications required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Requires a high school diploma or the equivalent. Requires two years of college (48 units) or pass the District’s assessment that demonstrates knowledge and skills in assisting in instruction or pass the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST). An Associate’s degree is highly desirable.


Experience: Some experience working with children, adolescents, and young adults in an organized setting, including individuals with special developmental needs.


LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid NCPI (Non-Violent Crisis Intervention) training and certification; employees must fulfill certification requirements within the first six (6) months of the probationary period.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certifications; employees must fulfill certification requirements within the first three (3) months of the probationary period.

Some positions in this classification may require the ability to fluently speak, read, and write a designated second language.
TESTING INFORMATIONThe examination process may be comprised of multiple choice exam, performance assessment, computer skills exam, or any combination of assessment appropriate to determine technical ability to perform the duties listed in thejob description.

Step 1: Application Screening (pass/fail) Applications will be screened for minimum qualifications, meeting Every Student Succeeds Act. Applications will be evaluated and ranked according to criteria that most closely meets the needs of the department, so it is essential that applicants provide as much detail as possible and answer all parts of the application, including work experience, the supplemental questionnaire and attach the necessary education documents. If there is a high number of qualified applicants, a comparative screening will be conducted to determine which of the applicants will be selected for invitation to the performance examination. Once your application is screened, you will receive email communication.

Step 1A: Proficiency Exam,(pass/fail),required if you do not possess a minimum of 48 college units.The proficiency examtest applicants on Math, English and the ability to assist a student. This will be offered on various dates - please call (805) 641-5000 x1177 to schedule.

Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications for the position will be emailed a notification to schedule their qualifications appraisal interview. Notification will not be sent until after the closing date for the position. If there is a high number of qualified applicants, a comparative screening will be conducted to determine which of the applicants will be selected for invitation to the qualifications appraisal interviews.

Step 2: Qualification Appraisal Interview(weighted 100%) the next interview is tentatively scheduled for11/5/25.
All applicants must achieve a passing score in each part of the examination process in order to be placed on the eligibility list and be eligible for a final interview.

ADDITIONAL SALARY INFORMATION
New Hires – Initial Salary Placement
The District has established criteria in place that recognizes the education and experience new employees bring to their role in supporting students and the services of the District. Upon approval of the Director of Classified Human Resources, a new employee may be provided with advanced step placement up to Step 5 based on the following criteria:
  • Additional qualifying experience beyond that required for entry into the class (limited to no more than one step for each two years of experience related to the classification)
  • Additional education at the college level beyond the educational requirements established for entry into the class (limited to no more than one step for each two years of education related to the position) To be considered for advanced salary placement upon hire transcripts and/or diploma must be provided

All new hires placed at Step 1 of the salary schedule will advance to Step 2 after successfully completing the six-month probationary period.

Longevity increments are offered based on years of service with the District: an additional 1.20% of base salary after completing 4 years of service, 4.10% at 9 years, 7.08% at 14 years, 10.15% at 19 years, 13.31% at 24 years, 16.46% at 29 years.

Promotional and/or transfer candidates will be placed at the appropriate step in accordance with established Personnel Commission Rules & Regulations.

Education Incentives
All active, regular classified employees are eligible for an education incentive if they possess a degree which is above and beyond the stated minimum qualifications for their classification.

AA/AS = 2.50%
BA/BS = 4.00%
MA/MS = 5.00%
Ed.D./Ph.D/JD = 6.00%

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS (Upon Offer of Employment)
  • Employment Verification: The Immigration Reform and Control Act requires that the District obtain documentation from every individual who is employed which verifies identity and authorizes his/her right to work in the United States.
  • Individuals selected for employment are required to submit to a tuberculosis risk assessment, and, if risk factors are identified, would then be required to submit to a tuberculosis examination to determine freedom from tuberculosis.
  • The District reserves the right to require a job related physical examination and satisfactory results from such an exam.
  • Fingerprinting: State law requires that all employees be fingerprinted. AB1610 prohibits employment until the Department of Justice completes its obligations regarding the arrest and conviction information, and from employing a person who has been convicted of a violent or serious felony, as defined.
