What to Expect

Deckhands are hired on an on-call basis, meaning there is no guaranteed schedule or minimum number of hours. However, depending on operational needs, there may be opportunities to work an average of 32 to 40 hours per week. Candidates must be available to work all shifts, including early mornings, mid-days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Additionally, deckhands must be able to report to any terminal within a 35-mile radius of their assigned homeport—defined as the terminal closest to their permanent residence.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you/the Deckhand will:

• Contribute to the safety and well-being of passengers, crew, and the vessel by maintaining a secure and hazard-free environment.
• Provide courteous assistance to passengers, including answering questions, offering boarding support, and escalating issues to the Mate when appropriate.
• Perform a variety of routine maintenance and janitorial tasks, such as cleaning passenger areas, stripping and waxing floors, restocking supplies, and removing debris.
• Operate the vehicle-loading bridge lift system to ensure safe and efficient loading/unloading operations.
• Serve as a backup during scheduled staff absences and be available to fill in during unexpected staffing needs.
• Assist in directing vehicle traffic onto the car deck, securing vehicles for transit, and removing inoperable vehicles when necessary.
• Actively participate in required emergency preparedness drills, including fire, abandon ship, and rescue exercises—handling firefighting equipment and assisting with lifeboat operations.
• Respond effectively in emergency situations by performing assigned duties listed on the muster list and assisting in rescue efforts as needed.
• Attend and complete all required safety, operational, and skills-based training as directed.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

• A valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) *
• A valid Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC), with a minimum of an OS or AB endorsement
• A valid United States Coast Guard Medical Certificate using the CG-719K long form, a successful color vision exam must be achieved without restrictions. *
• Valid unrestricted Driver’s License and ability to operate heavy equipment, such as a bullnose tractor and transfer spans.
• The ability to keep afloat (tread water) without a life jacket for a minimum of 60 seconds.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs. without assistance.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

• Accept work on-call 24/7, including holidays, and be punctual and reliable at all times
• Exceptional communication skills, other written and verbal
• Excellent customer service skills
• Ability to respond to vessel emergencies
• Knowledge of commonly used nautical terms
• Experience in the maritime environment

• The expected start date for this recruitment is July 13, 2026.
• This recruitment will be used to fill multiple positions.
• You will attend full-time paid training.

• In addition to the base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
