Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Outpatient Float Per Diem

HMHMG SPECIALTY CARE 570
Edison, NJ

The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) or Physician Assistant utilizes a patient-centered coordinated care model, demonstrating competencies in leadership, direct clinical practice, consultation/collaboration, coaching/guiding, research, and ethical decision-making. The APN works collaboratively with the practice/hospital team to assess, plan, and implement care for individuals with health and safety needs.

We are seeking an experienced per diem PA or NP to function as an outpatient float provider, covering gaps when primary APPs (PAs/APNs) are out due to PTO, leave, or temporary vacancies.
This role is designed to ensure continuity of care and operational support in the outpatient setting during short-term absences, with occasional opportunities for longer coverage (e.g., maternity leave).

This is not a panel-based role. The provider will not carry their own patient panel and is expected to step in briefly across multiple services to support physicians and clinical teams.

Per diem, as-needed coverage,No set days or standing schedule.
The initial onboarding may include approximately two days per week for one month for shadowing and orientation across multiple specialties

The float APP will provide general outpatient support, including but not limited to:

Seeing post-operative and follow-up patients

Assisting with patient phone calls, messages, and care coordination

Supporting physicians by entering orders, managing results, and closing care gaps

Helping ensure orders, documentation, and workflows are completed accurately and timely

Providing coverage to maintain smooth handoffs when an APP is unexpectedly or temporarily out

Collaborating with physicians, nursing staff, and office teams to keep clinics running efficiently

Scope & Flexibility:

Expected to support multiple outpatient specialties, rather than a single focused service line

Must be comfortable working without long-term patient relationships and adapting quickly to different practice environments

Strong generalist skill set preferred over narrow subspecialization

Experienced PA or NP with outpatient clinical experience

Comfortable stepping into new workflows and specialties with minimal ramp-up

Strong clinical judgment, communication, and EMR proficiency

Flexible, adaptable, and team-oriented

Prior float, locums, or cross-specialty experience is a plus

Purpose of the Role

This position exists to fill operational and clinical gaps, not replace permanent providers. The goal is to ensure continuity, reduce physician burden, and maintain outpatient clinic flow during short-term absences.
