TAs support a rich music curriculum focused on cultivating a caring, cooperative and fun community, utilizing the philosophy of El Sistema. POSITION SUMMARY We are seeking Teaching Artist (TA) Substitutes with experience to teach the following classes when Kidznotes Teaching Artists are absent. All substitutes will be provided with lesson plans prior to teaching. • Mozarts Violin or General Music Instruction: Mozarts classes provide introductory violin instruction to students in grades 1-2. This class is co-taught by a Durham Public Schools general music specialist and a Kidznotes violin Teaching Artist. Half of instructional time is spent on general music instruction and the other half on beginning violin technique. • Instrument Sectionals: This course instructs students in instrument technique, music and rhythmic literacy, and rehearse music from their ensembles that require extra attention. Sectionals occur for students across four levels of experience from grades 3-12. Sectionals include upper strings, lower strings (primarily cello), woodwinds, brass, and beginning piano. • Ensembles: Students will participate in a variety of large and small music ensembles including beginning strings ensemble, beginning band, elementary school choir, and two full orchestras (middle and high school). QUALIFICATIONS: • All Kidznotes substitutes must successfully complete the Durham Public Schools volunteer registration and training, which serves as a background check. If you are a Durham Public Schools employee, this is not required. • A minimum of 1 year or music education experience in a school, community, or private teaching setting. • Proven ability to work with non-auditioned youth musicians in grades 3-12 across various musical skills and experience. • Thorough knowledge of beginning to intermediate instrumental fundamentals, pedagogy, and music theory • Strong commitment to the mission of Kidznotes and El Sistema’s philosophy of social change through music • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to interface with diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic communities • Four-year undergraduate degree or equivalent experience preferred but not required • Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: • $40 per hour • Substitute is a 1099 independent contractor that does not qualify for benefits.
