This is a remote role and candidates must be located in the Austin, TX area and be willing/able to commute to the client site in Austin approximately one day per week.


Summary:

ThunderYard is seeking an experienced Network Engineer to support and enhance network infrastructure for mission-critical federal systems. In this role, you’ll design, implement, and maintain secure and resilient networks that ensure high availability and performance for essential government operations.


We’re looking for a detail-oriented and strategic thinker with extensive experience in enterprise network environments, strong troubleshooting skills, and a passion for delivering secure, scalable solutions. As a senior member of our team, you'll lead key initiatives, mentor junior engineers, and play a vital role in advancing infrastructure that powers important national missions.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Network Design & Implementation: Design, deploy, and manage functional networks (LAN, WLAN, WAN) to meet organizational needs.
  • Configuration & Installation: Configure and install network hardware and software, including routers, switches, firewalls, and servers.
  • Performance Monitoring: Monitor network performance and integrity, ensuring high levels of data availability and security.
  • Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve complex network issues escalated from lower-tier support, ensuring minimal downtime.
  • Security Management & Compliance:
  • Implement and oversee security measures, including firewalls, VPNs, and access controls, to protect network integrity.
  • Implement and manage network security configurations to meet NIST 800-53, DISA STIGs, and FedRAMP requirements.
  • Disaster Recovery: Develop and maintain disaster recovery plans to ensure business continuity.
  • Documentation: Maintain comprehensive documentation of network configurations, processes, and procedures.
  • Team Leadership: Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior network staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvements


Qualifications:


Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.


Experience:

  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in network engineering, with at least 2 years in a senior or lead role.
  • Experience with Cisco, Juniper, and/or Palo Alto Networks platforms.
  • Experience in network monitoring tools (e.g., SolarWinds, NetFlow, Wireshark).
  • Hands-on experience with network automation and scripting (e.g., Python, Ansible).


Certifications: Professional certifications such as CCNP, CCDP, or equivalent are highly desirable.


Technical Skills: Proficiency in network protocols (e.g., TCP/IP, OSPF, BGP), network hardware, and security systems.


Soft Skills: Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.


**Candidates must be willing/able to go to the client site as needed**


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with cloud networking solutions (e.g., AWS, Azure).
  • Knowledge of compliance standards and regulatory requirements related to network security.
  • Previous experience working with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) or other Federal Government agencies.


Compensation:

The salary is budgeted at $100,000-$110,000 annually, plus benefits. ThunderYard offers benefits including medical, dental and vision insurance, 401k matching, PTO, certification reimbursement and more.
