MSW II - Sanitation HIRING RANGE: $25.22 - $29.00 / HOUR
MSW III - Sanitation HIRING RANGE: $26.58 - $31.90/ HOUR

Position Highlights:

The MSW II - Sanitation is a skilled and motivated member of the City’s Sanitation Division, responsible for municipal trash waste collection, recycling, and disposal to ensure the cleanliness and safety of public spaces. This position involves operating heavy sanitation vehicles and equipment, while following all City and safety regulations. The ideal candidate holds a valid Class B CDL, has at least two years of relevant experience, demonstrates a strong work ethic, and possesses solid knowledge of trash collection procedures, traffic regulations, and commercial driving operations.

The MSW III - Sanitation is a skilled and dependable member of the City’s Sanitation Division, responsible for leading and performing advanced trash waste collection, disposal, and maintenance operations to ensure a clean and safe community. This position operates and maintains heavy equipment in compliance with all safety and regulatory standards. The ideal candidate holds a Class B CDL, has three or more years of trash collection experience, and demonstrates strong leadership, technical expertise, and knowledge of sanitation procedures and equipment operation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

MSW II:
• Operates a variety of sanitation vehicles and equipment, including side-load refuse truck to collect and transport solid waste, recyclables, and yard debris.
• Learns under supervisor to operate a variety of sanitation vehicles and equipment—including roll-off trucks, grapple hook trucks, and rear-load refuse trucks—for the collection and transportation of solid waste, recyclables, and yard debris.
• Performs routine pre- and post-trip inspections and performs basic maintenance to ensure vehicles and equipment remain in safe operating condition.
• Follows established routes, schedules, and safety procedures while maintaining compliance with all traffic laws and City regulations.
• Responds to public inquiries, service requests, and complaints in a courteous, professional, and customer-focused manner.
• Assure the placement, removal, and safe handling of waste and recycling containers to ensure efficient collection services.
• Maintains accurate records of daily activities, including time sheets, and Department of Transportation (DOT) inspection reports
• Ensures adherence to all City policies, environmental standards, and workplace safety protocols.
• Performs additional duties as assigned by the Sanitation Supervisor.

Equipment Operation:
• Safely operate and maintain a variety of equipment including but not limited to:

  1. Side-load automated refuse trucks
  2. Forklift
  3. Front Loader
  4. Skid Steer
  5. Portable generators and compressors

• Learns under supervisor to operate a variety of sanitation vehicles:

  1. Roll-off truck
  2. Grapple hook trucks
  3. Rear-load truck
  4. Recycling collection trucks
• Utilize equipment to support field operations such as trash collection and special clean-up projects.
• Report equipment malfunctions or safety concerns promptly and assist in coordinating necessary repairs.
• Operate vehicles and machinery safely under varying weather, traffic, and site conditions in accordance with City and DOT regulations.

MSW III:
All duties above and the following:

Proficient, independent operation of a variety of sanitation vehicles and equipment, including side-load refuse truck, roll-off trucks, grapple hook trucks, rear-load refuse truck to collect and transport solid waste, recyclables, and yard debris.
• Performs routine pre- and post-trip inspections and performs basic maintenance to ensure vehicles and equipment remain in safe operating condition.
• Knowledge of all routes, schedules, and safety procedures while maintaining compliance with all traffic laws and City regulations.
• Demonstrates knowledge of roll-off operations across multiple service areas, such as residential routes, parks, recycle center operations, event logistics, and Water Treatment Plant service needs.
• Responds to public inquiries, service requests, and complaints in a courteous, professional, and customer-focused manner.
• Maintains accurate records of daily activities, including time sheets, and Department of Transportation (DOT) inspection reports.
• Ensures adherence to all City policies, environmental standards, and workplace safety protocols.
• Assists in training lower-level sanitation staff to ensure safe and efficient work practices.
• Performs additional duties as assigned by the Sanitation Supervisor.

• Safely operate and maintain a variety of equipment including but not limited to:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in sanitation, waste collection, or a related field.
  • Licenses/Certifications:
    • Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
    • Clean driving record and ability to pass a DOT physical and drug test.
  • First Aid/CPR Certification preferred.
MSW III:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in municipal sanitation or related field.
  • Licenses/Certifications:
    • Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
    • Clean driving record and ability to pass a DOT physical and drug test.
  • First Aid/CPR Certification preferred.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

MSW II:
• Thorough knowledge of safety practices and procedures related to solid waste collection, equipment operation, and vehicle safety.
• Ability to safely lift, carry, and maneuver heavy materials while working in varying and sometimes adverse weather conditions
• Basic mechanical aptitude for performing vehicle inspections, identifying issues, and assisting with minor troubleshooting or maintenance.
• Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions with accuracy and attention to detail.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills, including the ability to respond professionally to residents, handle inquiries or complaints, and maintain positive community relations.
• Proficiency in the safe and efficient operation of equipment; ability to learn and adapt to new machinery and technologies as required.
• Skilled in the proper use of hand tools and specialized sanitation or maintenance equipment.

MSW III:
Intermediate knowledge of safety practices and procedures related to solid waste collection, equipment operation, and vehicle safety.
•Understanding of landfill operations, ensuring materials are handled, transported, and disposed of according to regulatory and site guidelines.
• Ability to safely lift, carry, and maneuver heavy materials while working in varying and sometimes adverse weather conditions
• Performs intermediate mechanical aptitude for performing vehicle inspections, identifying issues, and assisting with minor troubleshooting or maintenance.
• Effectively utilizes proper use of hand tools and specialized sanitation or maintenance equipment.
• Maintains a high level of proficiency in the safe and efficient operation of equipment.
• Applies advance understanding of written and verbal instructions with accuracy and attention to detail.
• Intermediate knowledge of computer skills.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills, including the ability to respond professionally to residents, handle inquiries or complaints, and maintain positive community relations.
• Takes initiative to learn and adapt to new machinery and technologies as required.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT
• Work is primarily outdoors in all weather conditions, may be extreme at times.
• Physical demands include prolonged driving, extended periods of standing or sitting, lifting and carrying materials, bending, and performing repetitive motions.
• Must be available to work weekends and City-observed holidays as required by the sanitation schedule.
