About the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS):The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) leads Indiana's emergency planning and operations, first responder training, and fire and building safety. The Indiana State Fire Marshal leads the Division of Fire and Building Safety (within IDHS), which oversees the enforcement of building codes and includes a fire investigations unit. The agency certifies and trains thousands of first responders and also hosts state-level exercises each year. IDHS also supports the state Emergency Operations Center (EOC), which leads response and coordination efforts for large-magnitude incidents.

Role overview:

The Multimedia Specialist plays a vital role in shaping the department's digital presence by creating and managing engaging content across social media, newsletters, websites, and multimedia platforms. This position requires a proactive self-starter that will focus on managing social media platforms, drafting agency newsletters, and maintaining web assets to effectively share critical information with the public and stakeholders.


Salary Statement:

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $53,222.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop multimedia content that supports agency goals and messaging.
  • Develop social media campaigns, manage content calendars, and analyze engagement metrics.
  • Draft and assist in producing agency newsletters and other communications.
  • Ensure all multimedia content aligns with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security's branding and quality standards.
  • Assist in maintaining web content, collaborating with internal teams to ensure websites are visually appealing, user-friendly, and up to date.
  • Stay updated on emerging multimedia trends, techniques, and technologies.

What You'll Need for Success:

Individuals in this role should minimally be able to articulate or demonstrate the following:

  • Proven experience in social media management and content creation, with a strong knowledge of social media platforms, tools, and best practices (Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkedIn).
  • Experience with design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator) and Canva.
  • Excellent written and communication skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team in a fast-paced government environment.
  • Strong creative and storytelling skills, with an eye for visual aesthetics.
  • Organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.

A degree is not required. However, at least 3+ years of experience applying the outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience using Salesforce Marketing Cloud.
  • Familiarity with project management tools such as Asana.
  • Knowledge of AP writing style.
  • Proficiency in web design and development.
  • Video production skills, such as capturing and editing footage.
  • Familiarity with emergency management or public safety communications.
