Position Overview

Cornerstone Mortgage Group is seeking an experienced Remote Underwriter to evaluate and underwrite residential mortgage loan files across Conventional and Government programs, with a strong emphasis on FHA underwriting. This role is responsible for ensuring loan quality, compliance, and salability while meeting regulatory, investor, and company guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Underwrite Conventional (FNMA/FHLMC) and Government loans (FHA, VA, USDA) in accordance with agency guidelines, investor overlays, and internal policies
  • Review and analyze borrower credit, income, assets, liabilities, and collateral to assess eligibility and risk
  • Interpret and apply investor overlays using AllRegs and agency updates to underwriting decisions
  • Issue clear and well‑documented approvals, conditions, counteroffers, or denials
  • Review appraisals, title, and supporting documentation to ensure compliance and loan salability
  • Utilize DU, LP, and GUS, and perform manual underwriting when required
  • Collaborate with loan officers, processors, closers, and post‑closing teams to resolve conditions and meet turn‑time expectations
  • Maintain compliance with FHA/HUD, VA, FNMA, FHLMC, TRID, RESPA, and applicable federal and state regulations
  • Stay current on agency guideline changes, investor updates, and industry best practices

Required Skills & Experience

  • 3+ years of residential mortgage underwriting experience
  • Hands‑on underwriting experience with Conventional and Government loan products (FHA required)
  • Proven experience researching investor overlays in AllRegs
  • Strong working knowledge of Encompass LOS

Nice‑to‑Have Qualifications

  • Experience underwriting VA and/or USDA loans
  • FHA Direct Endorsement (DE) and/or VA SAR certification
