The Opportunity:

Tetra Tech is seeking a Mid-Senior Wildlife Biologist or Wetland Scientist to support our growing Energy Practice based out of our Portland, OR office. This role focuses on permitting and environmental support for renewable energy projects, including wind, solar, and transmission infrastructure.

The ideal candidate will have experience in wildlife and/or wetland assessments, with a strong understanding of avian and bat ecology, permitting, and environmental impact analysis. This position offers a mix of technical writing, task management, and fieldwork, with opportunities for project leadership depending on experience.

Essential Job Functions:

Field & Technical Responsibilities

  • Conduct and/or coordinate wildlife and wetland surveys and habitat evaluations
  • Perform impact assessments for energy and infrastructure projects, with emphasis on wind energy
  • Support or lead field efforts, including avian and bat surveys, habitat delineations, and post-construction monitoring

Permitting & Regulatory Support

  • Support environmental permitting and due diligence efforts
  • Prepare and contribute to:
    • Eagle Conservation Plans (ECPs)
    • Bird and Bat Conservation Strategies (BBCSs)
    • Habitat Conservation Plans (HCPs)
    • NEPA documents (EAs/EISs)
    • ESA and Clean Water Act–related documentation
  • Support client and regulatory agency coordination

Project & Task Management

  • Develop proposals, including scopes of work, schedules, and budgets
  • Manage biology-related tasks, including coordinating field logistics and ensuring quality deliverables
  • Provide strategic input on projects related to renewable energy, traditional energy, and linear infrastructure
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, legislation, and industry standards.
  • Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
  • Work in a safe manner at all times and report all health and safety incidents and concerns.
  • Additional duties as required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Biology, Wildlife Ecology, Environmental Science, or related field (Master's preferred)
  • 5+ years of relevant professional experience, including:
    • Wildlife field surveys
    • Ecological assessment and environmental impact analysis
  • Minimum of 3 years of direct field experience
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills
  • Experience with:
    • Environmental permitting and due diligence
    • Biological resource management and habitat conservation planning
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work collaboratively across teams
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with avian and bat ecology, including risk assessments and mortality monitoring
  • Experience with wetland delineations
  • Proficiency with GPS equipment and GIS software (ArcGIS or similar)
  • Strong statistical or modeling experience
  • Experience with task or project management

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform fieldwork in outdoor and remote environments
  • Ability to walk long distances, including off-trail travel and uneven terrain
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions

Work Environment / Environmental Factors:

  • Hybrid role with a mix of office, remote, and field-based work
  • Fieldwork may include remote locations and extended outdoor exposure
  • Travel required based on project needs

Compensation:

Pay commensurate with experience.

Pay Range: $80,000-$120,000 annually

Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience and demonstrated work experience in the above role; skills, certifications, and competencies that align to the specified role; geographic location; and education, as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position.
