Job Description

The Medical Housekeeper performs essential cleaning, disinfecting, and sanitizing duties specifically within the fast-paced Emergency Department (ED) at the Alaska Native Medical Center campus. This vital role directly supports immediate patient care, rapid room turnover, and staff safety by ensuring trauma rooms, triage areas, patient bays, and ER waiting rooms remain hygienic, safe, and well-presented.

Responsibilities

  • Perform rapid and thorough cleaning and disinfection of assigned Emergency Department areas, including trauma rooms, patient bays, triage areas, restrooms, and ER public waiting spaces.
  • Execute immediate cleaning requests and rapid room turnovers to ensure continuous availability of ER beds for incoming patients.
  • Safely and urgently handle and transport high volumes of regulated medical waste, sharps containers, and heavily soiled linen.
  • Follow strict hospital protocols for bloodborne pathogens, high-touch surfaces, waste removal, and infection control in a trauma setting.
  • Clean and disinfect all surfaces in the patient care and trauma areas per hospital guidance, paying special attention to bodily fluid cleanup.
  • Clean and sanitize patient and public bathrooms, ensuring all surfaces are dry to prevent slip hazards in high-traffic areas.
  • Disinfect ER floors using approved methods, swiftly removing soil, debris, and fluid spills.
  • Rapidly replenish room supplies and replace disposable items per ED stocking standards to ensure medical staff have immediate access to necessary items.
  • Support terminal cleaning for discharged or admitted patients, including strict contact/airborne precaution rooms.
  • Document completed tasks using checklists and/or digital logs in real-time to update bed management systems.
  • Distribute linen to clinical areas and document accurately.
  • Perform post-cleaning validation checks before declaring the ER bay or trauma room ready for the next patient.
  • Respond to urgent calls for service requests and spill responses professionally, efficiently, and calmly.
  • Demonstrate commitment to safety, teamwork, and service excellence in a high-stress medical environment.
  • Participate in required department, organizational, and emergency-response training.
  • Restock EVS janitor closets and ED supply carts as needed to maintain constant readiness.
  • Other duties that are pertinent to the department or unit’s success also may be assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • At least 6 months’ experience that demonstrates a working knowledge of cleaning equipment and general cleaning processes.
  • The ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, callouts, etc.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English.
  • Candidates will be screened for tuberculosis exposure and infection as shown by a negative PPD, negative IGRA, or in cases where the PPD or IGRA is positive, a baseline chest x-ray, is required; and
  • Candidates must be immune/vaccinated for Hepatitis B or has a signed declination for Hepatitis B, and either is immune from or has been immunized against:
    • (i) influenza (annually and proof of vaccination or signed declination on file)
    • (ii) rubella,
    • (iii) rubeolla,
    • (iv) mumps,
    • (v) varicella chicken pox

Background Requirement:Level One:An individual is ineligible to work in any position that has Regular Contact With or Control over Children, Dependent Adults or Vulnerable Persons if the individual has been convicted of:

  • One or more felonies and/or two or more misdemeanors of Crimes Against Persons and/or Crimes of Violence.
  • Any Crime against a Child, Dependent Adult or Vulnerable person, regardless of its classification as a felony, misdemeanor, or other type of offense.
  • Any Sex Crime, regardless of its classification as a felony, misdemeanor, or other type of offense.
  • Murder.

Preferred Requirements

    • A valid Driver’s License and an acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under NMS’ vehicle insurance policy.
