Job Description

The Medical Assistant supports providers in a primary care clinic by performing both clinical and administrative tasks to ensure patients receive high-quality, efficient, and compassionate care. This role helps patients feel at ease, prepares them for examinations, assists providers during visits, and manages essential documentation and follow-up activities to support a smooth clinical workflow.

Responsibilities

  • Escort patients to exam rooms and notify the provider when patients are ready to be seen.
  • Ensure all laboratory and diagnostic test results are available and filed in the chart prior to the patient’s appointment.
  • Maintain exam rooms by keeping them appropriately stocked, organized, and clean.
  • Conduct initial intake with patients, including confirming the reason for visit, assessing symptoms, and obtaining vital signs such as weight, height, blood pressure, and temperature.
  • Verify and update patients’ current medications, contact information, and medical allergies at each visit.
  • Prepare patients for examinations by helping them understand what to expect and ensuring they are ready for the provider.
  • Assist providers during examinations and procedures as needed.
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens according to clinic protocols.
  • Provide patients with clear instructions about medications, special diets, and follow-up care as directed by the provider.
  • Transmit prescription refill requests as directed by the provider.
  • Perform phlebotomy as needed, in coordination with clinic workflows.
  • Monitor inventory and order medical, laboratory, and office supplies to ensure continuous availability.
  • Follow up on diagnostic tests, medications, blood work, and other clinical results and communicate outcomes to patients as directed.
  • Provide basic wound care and assist with dressing changes as directed by the provider.
  • Use computer applications, including electronic medical records (EMR), to document encounters and manage patient information accurately.
  • Update, organize, and file patient medical records in the EMR and other systems as required.
  • Process patient portal requests in the EMR system, including responding to messages and inquiries.
  • Handle refill requests, notify patients of lab results, and complete chart preparation for upcoming visits.
  • Follow verbal and written directions and adhere to established protocols and procedures.
  • Support a typical back-office clinical workflow while collaborating effectively with providers and other Medical Assistants.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2 years of clinical experience working as a Medical Assistant in a clinic setting.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Medical Assistant certification or higher-level clinical credential such as EMT, RN, or LPN.
  • Experience with electronic medical records (EMR), including systems such as Epic and Athena.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Working knowledge of electronic health records and applicable medical codes.
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology, including geriatrics and internal medicine.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with patients and clinical staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills with a patient-centered approach.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in managing clinical and administrative tasks.
  • Effective time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines in a busy clinic environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to address patient and workflow issues.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
  • Ability to follow directions given verbally or in writing and adhere to protocols.
  • Knowledge of HEDIS measures and related quality metrics.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods and frequently walk, sit, use hands and fingers, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
  • Ability to speak and hear clearly in English.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
  • Experience providing patient care in primary care, family medicine, or Medicare-focused settings.
  • Experience working with geriatric populations is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with Epic and other EMR platforms.
  • Experience with phlebotomy and specimen collection workflows.
  • Secondary language skills are a plus.
  • Ability to contribute positively to a calm, pleasant, and collaborative clinic culture.
  • Interest in professional growth with potential progression into roles such as Clinical Lead or office management.

Work Environment

This role is based in a primary care clinic located in Woodstock within a larger medical center setting. The Medical Assistant supports two providers at a time, within a team of up to four Medical Assistants, in a clinic that emphasizes a positive, calm, and pleasant work environment. The culture focuses on intentional kindness, respect, empathy, and leading by example in daily interactions. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with the clinic closed from noon to 1:00 p.m., providing a 30-minute uninterrupted lunch. The Medical Assistant works four days per week directly with an assigned provider in a typical back-office clinical workflow and spends one day per week on administrative tasks such as managing patient portal requests in Athena EMR, handling refill requests, notifying patients of lab results, and preparing charts for the following week. The clinic uses EMR systems and Microsoft Office and partners with an on-site phlebotomist for blood draws. The physical environment requires prolonged standing and frequent walking, sitting, and movement, including stooping and kneeling. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Woodstock, GA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $21.00/hr.
