About the Company
The Nebraska Attorney General’s Office is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as Bureau Chief of the Medicaid Fraud and Patient Abuse Unit (MFPAU), a federally certified Medicaid Fraud Control Unit responsible for investigating and prosecuting Medicaid provider fraud and patient abuse, and neglect statewide.
About the Role
The Bureau Chief directs all Unit operations, leads a multi-disciplinary team of attorneys, investigators, and auditors, and serves as the primary liaison to federal partners, including HHS-OIG and the U.S. Attorney’s Offices.
Responsibilities
- Direct all MFPAU operations, including strategic direction, case prioritization, and staff supervision.
- Supervise assistant attorneys general, investigators, and auditors on complex criminal and civil healthcare fraud matters.
- Lead criminal prosecutions and civil enforcement actions involving Medicaid provider fraud, patient abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation.
- Review and authorize investigative actions, charging decisions, civil complaints, and settlement agreements.
- Manage federal grant compliance and annual OIG recertification submissions.
- Serve as primary liaison to HHS-OIG, U.S. Attorney’s Offices, DHHS, and NAMFCU.
- Advise the Attorney General on healthcare fraud, patient protection, and MFPAU statutory obligations.
Requirements
- Graduation from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Licensed to practice law in Nebraska, or clear ability to be licensed by motion.
- Minimum of seven years of litigation experience, including significant criminal prosecution or complex civil litigation experience.
- Prior supervisory or leadership experience.
- Excellent legal writing skills, professional judgment, and commitment to public service.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ten or more years of criminal prosecution or complex civil litigation experience.
- Experience with Medicaid fraud, healthcare fraud, white-collar crime, or False Claims Act litigation.
- Experience leading a multi-disciplinary investigative or prosecutorial unit.
- Familiarity with federal MFCU grant requirements and OIG recertification processes.
Other
- Some travel required.
- A criminal history and abuse background check will be conducted prior to an offer of employment.
