Job Duties:

The Media and Communications Coordinator will support the Office of Volunteer Resources and Recovery by developing storytelling opportunities, managing digital communications, and supporting department-wide public relations efforts.

  • Develop and implement storytelling opportunities that highlight the impact of volunteers across City departments through written features, video scripts, interviews, spotlights, and other creative formats.
  • Manage agency social media accounts, including content creation, scheduling, graphic development, engagement monitoring, and analytics tracking.
  • Create and manage content for two dedicated newsletters, ensuring timely publication, clean copy, consistent branding, and alignment with organizational goals.
  • Coordinate the compilation, writing, editing, and layout production of the department’s Annual Report; manage deadlines, gather data from partners, and ensure accuracy and accessibility.
  • Use Asana to organize tasks, track progress, manage timelines, and collaborate with staff across the department and partner agencies.
  • Work with assigned City departments to develop and implement public relations, marketing, and media relations strategies to address issues, promote programs, and communicate with the public.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with news media, community leaders, volunteers, and citizen organizations.
  • Write news releases, message points, articles, advertising copy, talking points, and video scripts; draft and edit original stories and feature content for external distribution.
  • Coordinate and manage special events, including volunteer recognition programs, press opportunities, and community engagement events.
  • Support production of major volunteer-related publications as assigned, ensuring quality, timeliness, and adherence to City branding and communications standards.
  • Prepare and deliver oral and written presentations as needed.
  • Handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Serve on Alpha I status during emergencies, disasters, or inclement weather to provide accurate, timely information to staff, volunteers, and external audiences.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned based on department needs.

Minimum Requirements:

Media and Communications Coordinator II:

Minimum Qualifications:: Requires any combination of education (above high school level) and/or experience equivalent to four (4) years in fields such as public relations, communications, marketing, or journalism utilizing the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Special Requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City's operational status.

Media and Communications Coordinator III:

Minimum Qualifications: Requires a Bachelor's degree and three (3) years in the fields of public relations, communications, marketing, or journalism OR related equivalent combination of education (above high school level) and/or experience equivalent to seven (7) years.
Must have a current and valid driver’s license

Special Requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferences:

The ideal candidates will have experience utilizing various media to write scripts and tell stories (specifically volunteers) and developing and executing comprehensive marketing and public relations plans/strategies. Experience with managing social media accounts to promote programs, creating content newsletters and other publications, and public information officer or designated organization spokesperson. Experience implementing community engagement initiatives in a government setting or for a governmental agency.

Actual job level (e.g. II or III) will be determined on the qualifications of the selected applicant and made part of the job offer. The associated pay grades and ranges are as follows:
MCC II: G.25, $57,012.80 - $88,358.40
MCC III: A.13 $65,998.40 - $$102,297.52

VRS Contribution: All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
