Mechanical Engineer

Location: Indianapolis, Indiana

Role Overview

The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for creating detailed designs and production-ready mechanical drawings to support a custom metal fabrication shop. This role works closely with shop craftsmen, management, and customers to design fabrication solutions across manufacturing, industrial, construction, and architectural applications.


This position is hands-on and collaborative, requiring strong 3D modeling skills, attention to detail, and an understanding of fabrication processes including sheet metal, CNC machining, and welding. Occasional site visits and field measurements may be required to support customer projects.


Key Responsibilities

Design & Engineering

  • Design and produce detailed CAD models and fabrication drawings using SolidWorks
  • Create production-ready designs for fabrication methods including laser cutting, waterjet, press brake forming, CNC machining, and welding
  • Integrate vendor-supplied and non-metal components (lighting, wood, plastics, hardware) into CAD models and drawings
  • Support design-for-manufacturability and efficiency improvements

Collaboration & Process Improvement

  • Work directly with shop craftsmen to review fabrication methods, improve manufacturability, and enhance product quality
  • Collaborate with management to improve design standards, documentation, and engineering efficiencies
  • Provide technical support throughout fabrication and production

Customer & Field Support

  • Coordinate with customers to clarify design intent and requirements
  • Conduct occasional job-site visits for field measurements and design validation
  • Support cross-functional collaboration between engineering, estimating, and production teams

Qualifications & Experience

  • SolidWorks 3D modeling experience required (sheet metal design strongly preferred)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology (ME or MET)
  • Experience working in a fabrication, manufacturing, or industrial environment
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills
  • Logical yet creative thinker with strong attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, both internal and customer-facing
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
  • Occasional travel may be required
