Immediate Hire: Nuclear Mechanical Design Engineer (Fully Remote)

Job Description

The Mechanical Design Engineer will provide critical design engineering support across Reactor Pressure Vessels, internals, and mechanical containment penetrations. This role involves collaborating with vendor partners, developing design specifications, maturing design concepts, creating drawings and documentation, supporting procurement, and overseeing testing activities. The engineer will work closely with project managers, technical leads, sourcing teams, manufacturers, and partner engineering groups.

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical component design for BWR equipment, internal components, and plant servicing systems.
  • Support fabrication and installation activities, including oversight of mechanical component testing.
  • Ensure cost, schedule, quality, and technical accuracy of assigned tasks.
  • Provide technical guidance, lead scheduling and resource planning, and mentor junior engineers.
  • Serve as the primary point-of-contact for internal teams, customers, and external stakeholders.
  • Operate within a matrixed engineering team to deliver high‑quality work aligned with customer and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead analysis, design, testing, and integration of mechanical components per program standards.
  • Perform engineering hand calculations and modeling.
  • Prepare and present design reviews and technical reports to customers.
  • Facilitate productive team discussions and foster cross-functional collaboration.
  • Partner with subject‑matter experts to ensure designs meet all application and performance requirements.
  • Work closely with Sourcing and fabrication partners to resolve technical issues.
  • Prepare invention disclosures to support intellectual property efforts.

Essential Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
  • 8–10 years of design experience in fabrication or manufacturing environments, with at least 4 years in the nuclear industry.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience with ASME Section III nuclear industry standards.
  • Proficiency with GD&T, tolerance stack‑ups, and Inventor or comparable CAD tools.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across functions.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in the energy sector, preferably nuclear.
  • At least 2 years of technical or program leadership experience.
  • Experience working directly with customers, regulators, and suppliers.
  • 9+ years working with industry standards (e.g., AWS, BWRVIP).
  • Prior experience with BWR and PWR technologies.
  • Knowledge of lifting/rigging equipment selection and application.
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting equipment and implementing design changes.
  • Strong understanding of modern fabrication, welding processes, and material selection.
  • Familiarity with Lean methodologies.
  • Proficiency with Autodesk Inventor and product lifecycle management software.
  • Demonstrated leadership, strategic thinking, and problem‑solving abilities.

This is a Contract position based out of Wilmington, NC.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $65.00 - $85.00/hr.
