Work Schedule:Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., plus additional hours as needed for after-hours emergency repair calls.

Hiring Range:$31.53-35.25/hour

No residency requirement.

  1. Performs full range of mechanical maintenance and repair of all Fire Department vehicles and equipment, including work on trucks and other specialized equipment, brake services, making necessary adjustments, tuning engines, etc.
  2. Performs maintenance and repairs on specialized equipment, including hoses.
  3. Performs tire repairs and mounting, welding, mounts equipment.
  4. Performs rust and corrosion repair, minor bodywork.
  5. Assists in the maintenance and repair of self-contained breathing apparatus as directed.
  6. Establishes and maintains a comprehensive preventative maintenance program and maintains related records.
  7. Orders parts, tools and supplies.
  8. Assists in drawing up apparatus specifications.
  9. Maintains the maintenance shop. Ensures that the shop, tools, and equipment meet safety and housekeeping standards.
  10. Adheres to all safety standards, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  11. Coordinates with vendors and warranty service providers for specialized repairs.
  12. Trains Fire Department personnel on basic vehicle care, daily checks, and safe equipment operation.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Associate Degree in Diesel and Heavy Equipment Mechanics or related field.
  • One year experience in heavy equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Previous experience in the maintenance and repair of fire fighting vehicles and equipment highly desirable.
  • Valid driver's license with a good driving record and the ability to obtain a Wisconsin Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 6 months of hire.
  • A.S.E. Heavy Truck Certification. Will be required to obtain and maintain A.S.E. Emergency Vehicle Technician certification within 4 years of hire.

A combination of equivalent experience and/or education may be considered.
  • Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, equipment, tools, hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Considerable knowledge of the principles of gasoline and diesel mechanics and welding techniques. Considerable knowledge of hydraulic and electrical systems.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting electrical wiring diagrams, service manuals and other reference materials. Skill in diagnosing defective equipment. Skill in performing complete engine, transmission and related vehicle component overhauls.
  • Ability to install, repair and maintain specialized parts, including necessary field repairs. Ability to operate department equipment for maintenance. Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple tasks and work orders. Ability to communicate with and instruct Fire Department personnel in the proper care, use and servicing of equipment. Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment. Ability to utilize a computer and the required software. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public. Ability to work the required hours of the position, including responding to after-hours emergency repair calls as needed.
  • Physical Requirements

    Ability to perform the following activities:

    • Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
    • Occasionally lifting and carrying 50-100 pounds with assistance.
    • Frequent standing, walking, sitting, stooping and bending.
    • Occasional crawling.
    • Ability to focus for long periods of time on projects.
    • Ability to reach, climb aerial ladders, apply leverage from unusual positions and to work on creeper under vehicles.
    • Ability to work in varied environmental conditions.
