Job Summary
The MBO Folder Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining MBO and other folding equipment to produce folded printed materials according to customer specifications, quality standards, and production schedules. This role requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced commercial printing environment while minimizing waste and downtime.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment Operation & Setup
- Set up and operate MBO folding machines (including buckle folders, knife folders, and combination folds) to meet job specifications
- Read and interpret job tickets, folding diagrams, and layouts
- Perform accurate changeovers, including adjustments for paper size, fold type, grain direction, and register
- Proper use of measurement tools
- Ensure proper use of scoring, perforating, slitting, gluing, or specialty fold attachments when required
- Other duties as assigned
Quality Control
- Verify folds are accurate, consistent, and within tolerance
- Monitor output for defects such as cracking, misfeeds, wrinkles, skew, or incorrect folds
- Perform periodic checks and adjust equipment to maintain quality throughout the run
- Work closely with press and prepress teams to resolve fold-related issues
Productivity & Efficiency
- Meet or exceed production standards for speed, waste, and on-time delivery
- Minimize spoilage through proper setup, material handling, and preventive adjustments
- Perform quick, efficient job changeovers to support short-run and mixed work
Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Perform routine maintenance including cleaning, lubrication, and inspection
- Troubleshoot mechanical and operational issues during production
- Escalate complex mechanical issues to maintenance as needed
- Maintain accurate machine logs and maintenance records
Safety & Housekeeping
- Follow all safety policies and LOTO procedures
- Maintain a clean and organized work area (5S standards preferred)
- Safely handle paper, materials, and finished goods
Required Skills & Qualifications
Technical Skills
- 2+ years of experience operating MBO folding equipment in a commercial printing environment
- Strong understanding of common folds (letter, Z, accordion, half, 16-page signatures, gate, parallel, roll, knife folds, etc.)
- Knowledge of paper characteristics (grain direction, coatings, caliper, cracking prevention)
- Ability to detect and correct registration, feed, and delivery issues
Mechanical & Problem-Solving Skills
- Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on troubleshooting ability
- Comfortable making fine adjustments under production pressure
- Ability to diagnose issues related to rollers, belts, gates, feeders, and scoring
Quality & Detail Orientation
- High attention to detail with a strong commitment to quality
- Ability to consistently produce accurate, repeatable results

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with MBO models such as K760, K800, KBA/MBO systems, or similar
- Familiarity with scoring, perforating, and specialty folded products
- Experience in lean manufacturing or continuous improvement initiatives
- Forklift or material handling certification
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods
- Lift up to 50 lbs with or without assistance
- Manual dexterity for machine adjustments and material handling
Work Environment
- Fast-paced commercial printing and bindery environment
- Exposure to moving mechanical parts, paper dust, and noise typical of a print facility
