Job Title: Facilities Operations Assistant

Department: Parks and Recreation

Location: 200 Baker Lane, Charleston, WV 25302

Number of open positions: 8 Anticipated Start Date: 6/8/26 End Date: 7/31/26

Hours of work per week: Up to 35 hours per week

Salary: $13 per hour

General Description:

This position is part of the Mayor's Summer Youth Jobs Program for individuals aged 16-20 years old. Employment dates are June 8, 2026, through July 31, 2026. The Charleston Parks and Recreation MSYJP Summer Youth Employment and Internship Program Staff will support community recreation programs, camps, and events throughout the summer. This position provides an opportunity for young individuals to gain work experience, develop leadership skills, and contribute to creating a fun and safe environment for the community. This position requires working outdoors for extended periods, including prolonged exposure to sunlight, heat, and varying weather conditions. Candidates should be comfortable working in direct sun and taking appropriate precautions for sun protection.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in organizing and leading recreational activities, including sports, arts and crafts, and games.
  • Supervise youth participants to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
  • Set up and clean-up program areas before and after activities.
  • Assist with administrative tasks such as attendance tracking and program evaluations.
  • Provide customer service by interacting with parents, guardians, and community members.
  • Help maintain park facilities, ensuring they are clean and safe for use.
  • Enforce Parks and Recreation program rules while promoting positive behavior.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisors.

Qualifications:

  • Must be between 16-20 years old.
  • Enthusiastic, responsible, and enjoy working with children and the community.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Schedule & Work Hours:

  • The position runs from June 8, 2026-July 31, 2026.
  • Flexible schedule, including weekdays, occasional weekends, and holidays.

Additional Qualifications:

  1. Must have the ability to provide documentation verifying legal work status.
  2. Ability to read and speak the English language proficiently in order to communicate and interact with others; to understand and interpret safety instructions; and to respond to internal and external inquiries.
  3. Ability to understand and comply with City and departmental guidelines, policies, procedures and expectations.
