Job Description

Position Title: Grounds Maintenance Worker

Department: Spring Hill Cemetery Department

Location: Spring Hill Cemetery

Number of open positions: 4 Anticipated Start Date: 6/8/26 End Date: 7/31/26

Hours of Work per Week: Up to 35 hours per week

Business/Work Hours:

  • Initial schedule: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday
  • Adjusted schedule (as weather warms): 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM Pay Rate: $13/hour

General Description

The purpose of this position is to support the City of Charleston's summer maintenance operations by assisting in the upkeep and beautification of public grounds and cemetery spaces. This position is part of the Mayor's Summer Youth Jobs Program for individuals aged 16-20 years old. Employment dates are June 8, 2026, through July 31, 2026, with potential extensions based on availability and departmental needs. This position works under close supervision and performs duties according to established procedures.

Responsibilities, Tasks, and Projects

  • Operate lawn mowers, weed trimmers, and related equipment for grounds maintenance.
  • Perform litter collection, weeding, mulching, and plant care.
  • Assist with general upkeep of grounds and related facilities.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned by supervisors.

Candidate Requirements

  • Must be 16 years of age up to 20 years of age.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work.
  • Ability to lift 20 pounds and perform physical work for extended periods.
  • Must be able to work in varying weather conditions, including heat and light rain.
  • Must provide own lunch, sunscreen, and insect repellent.

Dress Code

Clothing appropriate for outdoor maintenance work, including:

  • Boots or sturdy sneakers
  • T-shirts and long pants

Provided by the City: safety glasses, hearing protection, work gloves, water, and tick repellent.

  • Must be authorized to work in the United States and able to provide documentation verifying legal work status.
