Job Description

The Material Supervisor / Material Planning & Logistics Process Coach oversees a large team of unionized employees in a high-volume automotive plant, ensuring that daily material handling and logistics operations run safely, efficiently, and in compliance with established policies and procedures. This role combines hands-on supervision with process coaching, driving performance, accountability, and continuous improvement across multiple areas of the plant.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and lead a team of approximately 50–90 unionized employees in material handling and logistics within the plant.
  • Oversee daily operations on the production floor, ensuring all assigned tasks are completed safely, accurately, and on time.
  • Hold team members accountable for following established policies, procedures, and work standards.
  • Coordinate material flow to and from production lines to support uninterrupted manufacturing operations.
  • Monitor performance, address issues promptly, and provide clear direction and feedback to employees.
  • Make quick, informed decisions in a very fast-paced environment to resolve operational challenges and minimize downtime.
  • Support and enforce workplace rules, safety guidelines, and quality standards in alignment with union and plant requirements.
  • Collaborate with other supervisors, logistics staff, and plant leadership to align material planning and execution with production schedules.
  • Use basic computer tools, including Excel, to track operations, report status, and support planning activities.
  • Adjust to rotating swing shifts and extended hours as needed to ensure adequate leadership coverage for all production crews.
  • Arrive before production starts and remain after production ends to prepare the shift, conduct handovers, and address any post-shift issues.
  • Coach team members to improve performance, build accountability, and support a culture of continuous improvement.
Essential Skills
  • Previous experience supervising employees in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • Previous experience supervising within a union environment.
  • 3–5 years of supervision experience within an automotive facility.
  • Experience working in an automotive environment, preferably with an OEM or tier 1 supplier.
  • Background in logistics or material handling within a manufacturing setting.
  • Basic computer literacy, specifically with Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to make quick decisions in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to hold others accountable while maintaining professional working relationships.
  • Resilience and emotional toughness, with the ability to handle a demanding environment and difficult situations (“thick skin”).
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a relevant field, is beneficial.
  • Experience working in or with large automotive plants.
  • Recommendations or positive references from automotive management professionals are a strong asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively across multiple shifts and changing schedules.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to oversee large teams and complex operations.

Work Environment

The position is based in a high-volume automotive manufacturing plant with a very fast-paced and dynamic environment. Work is performed on the production floor and in logistics areas, closely supporting active production lines. The role requires flexibility with hours and shifts, with some supervisors working 60–70 hours per week depending on operational needs. This is a rotating swing shift position, cycling every three months between A, B, and C crews: A crew runs Monday through Thursday from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; B crew runs Tuesday through Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.; C crew runs Friday and Saturday from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday and Monday nights from 6:00 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. Supervisors are expected to arrive 30–45 minutes before production starts and stay after production ends to manage shift transitions and address issues. The dress code is business casual, and golf shirts or similar attire are appropriate. Basic computer systems, including Excel, support planning and tracking activities, and the environment demands quick decision-making, strong presence on the floor, and constant coordination with production and logistics teams.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $38.00/hr.
