Marine Maintenance Laborer - Limited Time Duration

We're hiring a Marine Laborer for the Port of Portland!

Please note: This is a limited-duration role with a defined sunset date set for six months from the official start date.

Generally, the working schedule will be Monday - Friday, 7 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. with occasional overtime and weekends required. During the summer season, hours change to Monday - Friday, 6 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
  • General labor and construction responsibilities including asphalt repair (crack/seal repair), general maintenance and repair (M&R) of marine rail systems, basic M&R and care of equipment and vehicles allocated to the group, provide general labor for other crafts needing assistance, and perform light janitorial duties.
  • Participate in multi-trade work tasks that involve more complex maintenance and repair activities. Perform emergency repair work as assigned.
  • Perform administrative and other work task duties as assigned.
  • Position reports to and takes direction from the lead Foreman assigned for the composite group.
Experience and Education
  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Minimum two (2) years of general labor and equipment operation in a construction and/or maintenance environment; or the equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience.
  • License and/or Certification:
    • Journeyman level certification preferred.
    • Maintain a valid state driver's license is required.
      • Class A commercial driver's license at time of hire is preferred; or the ability to obtain one within the probationary period is required.
    • Ability to obtain and maintain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) from the Federal government is required. All licensing fees will be reimbursed by the Port of Portland.

  • Must be able to demonstrate the physical ability to perform general construction labor tasks and ability to operate various construction equipment.

SELECTION PROCESS (tentative schedule):
  1. A minimum qualification evaluation of education, training, and experience of submitted application packets will take place by Human Resources the week of May 4, 2026.

  2. A Subject Matter Expert (SME) Panel will perform an evaluation of experience and training taken from your employment application materials including any responses to the supplemental questionnaire.

  3. Our goal is to schedule panel interviews with candidates that successfully passed the SME evaluation step as soon as possible.
