Essential Job Duties:Serves to assist the Douglas County Marine Deputy in boater safety through education, public assistance, and enforcement of marine laws with emphasis on boating under the influence; performs boater safety checks and provides public assistance on County waterways; responds to boating incidents, and investigates reports of theft and vandalism; and performs other related work as required. Successful completion of mandatory training and working varied shifts is required.The Sheriff's Office Requires the Following Minimum Qualifications:
  • Patrol all rivers and areas of water located in Douglas County providing enforcement of all water and marine safety laws, rules, ordinances, and regulations as needed.
  • Conduct boater safety/equipment checks and watercraft inspections; issue warnings and citations when needed.
  • Investigate thefts and vandalism of boats, marine equipment and/or facilities, gather statements of offenders and witnesses, prepare reports, give testimony in court, and carry out other administrative marine patrol work as needed for completion of all investigations and as may be mandated by the State Marine Board.
  • Participate in search and rescue operations in response to boating incidents or other emergencies;
  • Assist, interpret, and inform the public of relevant marine and watercraft rules and regulations; provide boater education through schools and other organizational events.
  • Operate marine equipment, boats and other related department vehicles; and assist in the maintenance and cleaning of equipment.
  • Regular and consistent attendance is required as position’s primary functions are needed during special events and seasonally when the highest volume of boaters, fisherman, swimmers, and other visitors are recreating in or near the water.

Preference may be given to applicants with public safety experience/training.

Only those persons who will be able to successfully pass an intensive background investigation need apply.


Must be at least 18 years of age, possess a high school diploma or GED certification, have no prior convictions of any state or federal government of a crime punishable by imprisonment in state or federal prison; must have good moral character as determined through background investigation; must pass physical examination by a licensed physician (conducted at County expense); must have an acceptable driving record and possess a valid Oregon driver’s license at the time of appointment;must possess at least an intermediate or equivalent swimming capability as determined by successful completion of a Marine Board Swim Test Standard Certification test prior to interviewing for the position; and must possess or be able to obtain an Oregon State Marine Board Boaters Education Card, as well as meet marine qualifications of the agency, within 30 days of hire.

Knowledge of: Basic knowledge of boats and safe boating practices and procedures; pertinent federal, state and local regulations relating to water safety and operation of watercraft and marine equipment. Skill in communicating effectively with individuals during difficult and often stressful situations; writing and maintaining accurate records and reports; operating electronic or communication equipment such as cell phones, radios, laptops, and tablets. Ability topass swim standards; properly utilize marine and police equipment; collect, evaluate and analyze facts and draw correct conclusions; understand and follow oral and written orders; interact with other law enforcement in a professional manner; and work in a variety of locations within Douglas County and during a variety of shifts.

  • Applicants must complete Marine Board Swim Test Standard Certification prior to interviewing for this position.
  • Applicants must posses or be able to obtain an Oregon State Marine Board Boaters Education Card within 30 days of hire.
Selection Process:Applicants will advance through the following phases of the selection process:
1. Initial screening based on minimum qualifications
2. Marine Board Swim Test Standard Certification
4. Oral interviews
5. Extensive background investigation (including criminal, personal and work-related elements)
6. Psychological Exam
7. Chemical detection screen
8. Physical exam
9. Hearing exam

Applications will be further evaluated during the background investigation for honesty, integrity, and maturity.


If a conditional offer is made, candidates must also pass post-offer job-related psychological, physical evaluation and drug testing for the use of prohibited drugs.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION:At any time during the application process applicants may have their background packet activated and assigned to a background investigator. Background investigations are comprehensive; therefore they can average six (6) to eight (8) weeks to complete. Delays in processing your background investigation may be caused by not completing all entries, not submitting required documents, or references not responding to an investigator’s inquiries. If at any time during the hiring process it is determined by the Sheriff’s Office that the candidate does not pass the background investigation the candidate will be notified, and the application will be inactivated. This may occur prior to, during, or after any of the testing phases and/or placement on the eligibility register.

Selection Process:Screening of applicants based upon minimum qualifications listed above; completion of a written examination and physical ability test; oral interview; extensive background investigation; psychological test; physical exam and chemical detection screen.

Note:Applicants may be disqualified after unsuccessful completion of any phase of evaluation.

Work is primarily performed in a crowded, noisy environment andemployees must be able to work all shifts, which includes nights and weekends. Requires bending, color identification, gripping with hands and fingers, hearing alarms and voice conversation, keyboarding, kneeling, lifting/carrying up to 14 pounds, pulling, pushing, reaching, sitting, standing.
