Position Summary

Exosens Scientific is seeking a hands-on Manufacturing Engineer to support electrical testing, troubleshooting, and manufacturing of Microchannel Plates (MCPs) and Channeltron detectors. This role operates directly on the factory floor within an ISO 7 cleanroom and ensures detector assemblies meet electrical, vacuum, and performance specifications.

The ideal candidate is a hardware-focused engineer who enjoys working with high-voltage, high-vacuum systems and is comfortable in a highly technical, hands-on environment. This position plays a key role in sustaining production, improving yield, and supporting the transition from manual to semi-automated test systems.

Candidates with backgrounds in semiconductors, vacuum systems, photonics, electron optics, or similar high-voltage technologies are strongly encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical Testing & Data Integrity

  • Perform electrical testing of MCPs and Channeltron detectors
  • Operate and maintain high-vacuum systems (10⁻⁷ to 10⁻⁶ Torr)
  • Ensure data accuracy and escalate anomalies as needed

Troubleshooting & Failure Analysis

  • Diagnose issues in detector assemblies (electrical and mechanical)
  • Perform full teardown and root cause analysis
  • Investigate failures such as low gain, shorts, vacuum leaks, contamination, and misalignment

Manufacturing Support

  • Partner closely with cleanroom operators on daily production activities
  • Provide rapid response to production issues
  • Develop and update work instructions, SOPs, and test documentation
  • Train operators and engineers on testing and teardown procedures
  • Drive yield improvement and scrap reduction initiatives

Process Improvement & Quality

  • Track and analyze yield, scrap, and defect trends
  • Utilize tools such as MINITAB for SPC and trend analysis
  • Support implementation of Lean Manufacturing, 5S, and SPC
  • Promote adherence to ISO 9001 Quality Management System

Equipment & Test Systems

  • Maintain and configure test equipment (high-voltage power supplies, vacuum systems, electrometers, oscilloscopes)
  • Support test fixture setup and modifications
  • Assist with transition to automated testing solutions

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Support BOM development, routings, tooling, and cost estimates
  • Provide engineering support across multiple product lines
  • Ensure on-time delivery of production outputs

Required Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizenship (required due to ITAR regulations)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Materials, Physics, or related engineering field
  • Hands-on experience with high voltage, vacuum systems, precision instrumentation, or cleanroom environments
  • Strong troubleshooting skills in electrical and mechanical systems
  • Solid mechanical aptitude and willingness to work directly with hardware
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general engineering software tools

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in semiconductor, photonics, vacuum systems, or electron optics industries
  • Familiarity with SPC tools (e.g., MINITAB)
  • Experience with high-voltage power supplies, turbopumps, vacuum chambers, or electrometers
  • Background in assembling/disassembling delicate electro-mechanical systems
  • Understanding of electron-multiplying devices (e.g., MCPs, PMTs, avalanche detectors)

Work Environment

  • 100% on-site in an ISO 7 cleanroom (gowning required)
  • Exposure to high-voltage and high-vacuum equipment (training provided)
  • Day shift with occasional off-shift support for critical production needs
  • Use of PPE including gloves, safety glasses, and hearing protection

Additional Details

  • Experience Level: 5–10+ years preferred
  • Highly hands-on role with custom-built equipment (training provided)

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Background in electro-mechanical systems, vacuum environments, and test engineering
  • Strong experience in failure analysis, troubleshooting, and production support
  • Comfortable working on custom equipment in a manufacturing setting
