The City of Monterey Park is now hiring for the full-time position of Maintenance Worker in the Public Works Department.Due to recent promotions, there are 4 vacancies in the Streets Division and 2 vacancies in the Parks Division.
THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENTThe Public Works Department is responsible for providing and maintaining the City's infrastructure in a manner that ensures the health, safety, and welfare of the City's residents and visitors. This includes the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operations of public land, including parks, roadways, sidewalks, sewers and storm drains; public buildings and structures; water production, storage and delivery facilities; and the repair and maintenance of City vehicles and equipment. The Public Works Department is made up of the following divisions: Community Transportation, Engineering, Street Maintenance Services, Parks, and Water Utility.
A Maintenance Worker is an entry level position that receives general supervision from a Senior Maintenance Worker or Crew Leader and is responsible for performing a variety of tasks in the cleaning and maintenance of city streets, parks and/or facilities.
THE POSITION
The Maintenance Services Division is responsible for conducting routine maintenance activities ranging from patching potholes and repairing damaged sidewalks to overseeing the city’s street sweeping contract and preparing the city’s roads for the annual slurry seal program that repairs the asphalt streets.
When assigned to Streets, the essential duties and responsibilities of a Street Maintenance worker may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Operates various sizes and types of trucks and trailers to move equipment and materials
- Performs a variety of heavy manual labor
- Performs unskilled and semi-skilled labor in construction and maintenance of streets and street components in the installation,maintenance, and repair of water service meters, mains, and pipes
- Repair and fill in potholes
- Assists in the pouring and finishing of concrete slabs and walks
- Assists in the installation, maintenance and repair of fire hydrants, valves, and related facilities
- Hauls, spreads and rakes asphalt for new or repaired thoroughfares
- Work with hot asphalt mix, mix concrete (90-pound bags), break and lift concrete/asphalt debris
- Set up and maintain equipment, barriers, warning, and directional signs
- Performs traffic painting tasks by assisting with placing and moving stencils
- Maintains manholes, sewers, and storm drains
- Bus shelters clean up using pressure washer
- Graffiti removal
- Weed abatement
- Making sandbags
- Paint curb red
The Park Maintenance Division provides the maintenance for a total of 14 city parks. When assigned to Parks, a Maintenance Worker is responsible for maintenance of up to two parks per day. The Maintenance Worker is part of a crew consisting of 1-Crew Leader, 3-Maintenance Workers, 1-part time Maintenance Worker. A typical day consists of morning litter/trash cleanup by themself and will rejoin a crew to perform park landscape maintenance.
When assigned to Parks, the essential duties and responsibilities of a Park Maintenance worker may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Trims shrubbery; waters and fertilizes lawns; rakes leaves
- Cleans walks, fields, courts, park grounds, restrooms and outdoor areas
- Weeds; plants and transplants, cultivates, waters, and sprays shrubs and flowers
- Operates power landscape equipment
- Assists in moving and installing recreation facilities
- Assists skilled workers in repairs to buildings
- Uses hand tools in rough maintenance work
- Assists in the installation, repair and maintenance of sprinkler systems
- Assists with maintenance, repair and painting of playground equipment; paints
EXPERIENCE/EDUCATIONA typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:- One year of experience in construction maintenance work or related labor or semi-skilled work, and completion of basic education.
- Graduation from high school or GED is highly desirable
- One year of experience in streetsmaintenance work is highly desirable
- One year of ground or park maintenance experience is highly desirable
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIESKnowledge of: basic methods, equipment, materials, hand tools, power tools and equipment, pertaining to street construction and maintenance; safe work practices.
Skills/Abilities: ability to follow written and oral instructions; perform manual labor; perform semi-skilled duties; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
LICENSES- Possession of valid Class "C" California motor vehicle operator's license required at time of appointment and as a continuing condition of employment.
- Ability to obtain a valid California Class B Motor Vehicle Operator’s License within 12 months of appointment is required and is a condition of continued employment (unless medically unable to qualify).
PHYSICAL EFFORTRequires some physical effort including bending, stooping, climbing and lifting items weighing 20 – 100 lbs.
