Under general supervision, the Maintenance Technician – Wastewater performs semi-skilled maintenance, repair, and operational work on the City’s wastewater collection and water distribution systems. This position ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of utility infrastructure through inspections, maintenance, repair, and emergency response.

The Maintenance Technician supports departmental operations by assisting with system diagnostics, maintaining lift and pump stations, performing preventative maintenance, responding to service calls and emergencies, and collaborating with other Public Works divisions to maintain high standards of service delivery.

Wastewater and Water System Maintenance: Performs maintenance and repair of the City’s wastewater collection and water distribution systems, including inspecting manholes and cleanouts, jetting and cleaning sewer mains, repairing lines and associated infrastructure, and responding to sanitary sewer overflows or service disruptions.
Equipment Operation and Work Zone Safety: Operates a variety of light and heavy equipment under the guidance of the Crew Leader to excavate, repair, and replace damaged water and wastewater lines. Establishes and removes barricades and traffic control devices to secure work areas and ensure public and employee safety.
Lift and Pump Station Maintenance: Inspects and maintains lift stations and pump stations, including pumps, valves, floats, wet wells, and control systems. Performs grounds maintenance and minor mechanical or electrical repairs to support continuous system operation.
Diagnostic and Monitoring Activities: Assists with system testing, leak surveys, video inspections, and other diagnostic procedures to identify, document, and resolve system issues. Monitors chlorine residuals, collects water samples, and participates in flushing activities as required.
Interdepartmental and Emergency Support: Assists other Public Works divisions, including Parks, Streets, Wastewater, and Meter Services with maintenance, repairs, and special projects. Responds to work orders, service calls, and emergency situations to restore service and maintain system integrity.
Other Duties: Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Utility System Knowledge: Knowledge of wastewater collection and water distribution systems, including materials, tools, equipment, and maintenance practices. Understanding of safe work methods, excavation procedures, and diagnostics for utility infrastructure.
Equipment Operation Skills: Skill in operating a variety of hand tools, power tools, and light and heavy equipment for utility maintenance, repairs, and installation projects.
Safety and Compliance: Knowledge of traffic control methods, confined space protocols, and safety procedures to protect personnel and the public. Ability to implement and follow safety standards in all work activities.
Teamwork, Leadership, and Communication: Ability to work collaboratively with other technicians and divisions, follow written and oral instructions, and maintain accurate documentation. Strong oral and written communication skills to report work activities, issues, and project status effectively.

Maintenance Tech I

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma/GED.

LICENSE, CERTIFICATION OR OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possess a valid State of Texas Class C Driver License at time of hire.

NOTE:Must possess and maintain a State of Texas Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within one year of date of hire.

Must have the ability to remain on call as required for after-hours repairs, emergencies, and related operational needs.

Maintenance Tech II

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma/GED.

One or more years of experience in water distribution and wastewater collection maintenance, repair, and operational work.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

LICENSE, CERTIFICATION OR OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possess a valid State of Texas Commercial Driver (CDL), Class B at time of hire or career progression.

Must hold or obtain a Class I Wastewater Collection License as issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) within six months of date of hire.

Must have the ability to remain on call as required for after-hours repairs, emergencies, and related operational needs.

Maintenance Tech III

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Two or more years of experience in water distribution and wastewater collection maintenance, repair, and operational work.

LICENSE, CERTIFICATION OR OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possess a valid State of Texas Commercial Driver (CDL), Class B at time of hire or career progression.Possess and maintain two or more of the following License at the time of hire or career progression:

  • Class I or higher Wastewater Collection license as issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

  • Backflow Prevention and Testing (BPAT) license as issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

  • Class D, or higher, Water License as issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ)

Must have the ability to remain on call as required for after-hours repairs, emergencies, and related operational needs.
