The City of Roanoke's Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a Maintenance Technician III to participate in a work crew engaged in highly skilled athletic field maintenance and sports turf management activities. The successful candidate will perform work in multiple skilled trades and supervise and perform the work of field and facility maintenance with other workers and technicians.
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and three to five years of experience and/or training in trades area assigned or equivalent combination of education and experience.
This is a non-exempt position.

SUMMARY
Participates in skilled and manual labor related to athletic field care, maintenance, and preparation for play primarily in River’s Edge Sports Complex. Assists with sports turf management, field prep including lining and dragging, sport equipment assembly and maintenance, mowing and weed control, and equipment maintenance and repair. Provides logistical support to athletic events as needed. Operates and maintains various types of athletic field maintenance and equipment operation including mowers, weed whackers, aerators, sprayers, rollers, drag machines, chalkers, stripers, etc. Must have ability to perform computer word processing, record keeping, and report preparation. Operates heavy and light equipment for snow and ice removal. Possession of a valid Virginia’s driver’s license required.
Must be able to obtain a Class B Commercial Learner’s Permit and be able to obtain a full CDL License within 12 months and obtain a Fertilizer Applicator License and Pesticide Commercial Applicator Certification within 12 months. High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and three to five years training/experience in athletic field and turf maintenance or the equivalent combination of education and experience. May require night, weekend, and emergency weather-related work.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
· Knowledgeable in all aspects of professional sports turf management – warm and cool season
· Assists in supervision and performance of the work of athletic field maintenance workers and technicians
· Makes repairs and renovations to fields and grounds including mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding
· Discusses job requirements with and receives detailed instruction from supervisor
· Supervises crews in absence of Maintenance Tech IV
· Inspects work in progress to assure conformance with instructions
· Requisitions necessary equipment and materials
· Maintains time and material records and prepares simple reports
· Performs or assists in performing more difficult or skilled tasks
· Coordinates with other department operational and technical personnel in the performance of assigned tasks
· Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs and services the full range of power-driven equipment used in athletic field maintenance and sports turf management
· Operates heavy and light equipment in snow removal
· Assists with athletic events, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends, as needed
· Follows established safety procedures.
