The City of Roanoke is seeking to fill (4)Maintenance Technician I positions to work with the Landscape Crew and the Streets Crew.

For Landscape, the successful candidate will engage in a variety of turf maintenance activities throughout the City Rights-of-Way (ROW) and responsible for adhering to an established mowing cycle. They must have knowledge of and ability to skillfully operate and do routine daily service and maintenance on a wide variety of equipment including Ventrac, zero-turn and walk-behind mowers, string trimmers, edgers and leaf blowers; perform semi-skilled landscape maintenance including minor tree pruning, aerating, overseeding, mulching, turf renovations and other landscape maintenance duties as needed. Operates heavy and light equipment in snow removal and assists with emergency tasks, including some nights, weekends, and holidays as needed. High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and two to three years related experience and/or training in trades area assigned; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Requires possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment.
May be required to obtain a Registered Technician Pesticide License and a Fertilizer Applicator Certification within 12 months.

For Streets, this position will perform skilled work on or around the operation of heavy motorized equipment involved with roadway maintenance and repairs. Equipment used includes asphalt distributor, dump truck, backhoe, heavy front-end loader, large motor grader and various hand tools to complete assigned tasks. Also makes repairs to alleys, road shoulders, medians, curbs and sidewalks. Services and makes minor repairs and adjustments on equipment. May be asked to operate independently or supervise a street maintenance crew involving street construction repair when the supervisor is absent. They will operate heavy and light equipment in snow removal and assists with emergency tasks, including some nights, weekends, and holidays as needed. Maintain accurate log sheets, checklists and pre-trip sheets. High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and two to three years related experience and/or training in trades area assigned; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Requires possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment.
Ability to obtain Tanker Endorsement (N) may be required within 12 months of employment.
Completion of other tasks and jobs supporting the division may be assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one to three years related experience and/or training in the trades area assigned; or equivalent combination of education and experience.LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

REASONING ABILITY

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Depending on area of assignment, may require possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and/or a valid appropriate Class A, B or C commercial driver's license with specific endorsements depending on departmental requirements. May require Pesticide Registered Technician Certification.
