Maintenance Technician - Ammonia

This is a position for one of Talent HRizon's manufacturing clients about 30 minutes east of Raleigh, NC.


Position Summary:

The Maintenance Technician III is responsible for 1) troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining production equipment and machinery, and 2) providing facilities maintenance as required to support the operation of the plant.

Candidates should have a good aptitude for independent problem solving. We are an extremely fast-growing company that faces the problems of a start-up so everyone does a bit of everything. Ability to stay organized and work meticulously is high on our list of important attributes.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Uses hand tools, power tools and precision measuring and testing instruments to repair and maintain, in accordance with diagrams, sketches, operation manuals, and manufacturer's specifications, machinery and mechanical equipment, such as engines, motors, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, and production machines and equipment.
  • Ensures new machines are prepared for operation following protocols and procedures, and performs regular technical testing to ensure their safety and efficiency.
  • Collects data on machine operation, and suggests actions to reduce machine downtime.
  • Provide leadership, direction, and training to production line workers and ensure employees are knowledgeable in GMP’s
  • SOP’s and safety procedures
  • Working knowledge of production equipment, startup, and shutdown of production lines
  • Ensure all safety requirements are met such as personal protective equipment, WHMIS, lockout/tag out procedures, and chemical mixing precautions
  • Identify and report potential hazards
  • Can identify minor equipment problems and remedy them or report to more experienced staff
  • Identify and take action on issues that may impact food safety and quality by bringing concerns to Supervisor’s attention
  • Ensure completion of all daily reports and required documentation
  • Lead by example – by dealing with team members and responding to changes in the work environment in a positive manner
  • Must possess maturity, treat others with respect in a mentoring environment
  • Focus primarily on working with the crew, leading by example, setting the pace, and training
  • Drive production for assigned line to meet company standards and goals
  • Schedule lunch and coffee breaks
  • Liaise with maintenance department for equipment repair and maintenance
  • Observe closely the working procedure and bring up suggestions for improvement
  • Request line clearance approval for each run.
  • Write and update SOPs for packaging line
  • Responsible for ensuring staff follow current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as well as other work procedures and company policies.
  • Observe and enforce all company and department safety policies as outlined in the company policies and training sessions.
  • Oversee the department in the absence of the Supervisor and/or Manager.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 4 - 6 years Manufacturing Maintenance experience
  • Experience with Ammonia refrigeration systems
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills
  • Ability to conduct staff training
  • Demonstrated experience with Good Manufacturing Practices
  • Ability to motivate staff in a positive manner
  • Mechanically inclined and able to troubleshoot equipment
  • Team player with a positive attitude
  • Work well within time restraints and able to meet deadlines
  • Speak and write effectively in English
  • Respect for authority and company policy
  • Demonstrated attention to detail
  • Safety conscious


Preferred Skills:

  • An diploma or certification accreditation from a technical school or an applicable skilled trades program
  • Experience in Food Manufacturing is an asset
  • Previous supervisory experience an asset
