GENERAL PURPOSE:

Performs senior-level technical or specialized work in the Public Works department. Performs semi-skilled and skilled work in one or a combination of the following fields: landscaping, lawn service, tree trimming and installation, plant installation and maintenance, and sod installation. Work is performed under limited supervision with moderate latitude. Position relies on experience and exercises independent judgment to determine best approach by using and interpreting policies and procedures.

Hours of work: Monday – Thursday: 7:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.; Days and hours are subject to change

  • Performs advanced landscape maintenance at City parks, athletic fields, facilities, medians, rights-of-ways
  • Oversees and participates in mowing, edging, trimming, pruning, mulching, planting of annuals/perennials, sod installation, and seasonal color rotations throughout the City
  • Monitors and treats turf and landscape areas for pests, disease, and nutrient deficiencies in accordance with State of Florida regulations and City standards.
  • Leads small crews in daily operations by assigning tasks, training staff, inspecting work for quality, and ensuring adherence to safety procedures
  • Operates specialized equipment such as zero-turn and wide-area mowers, tractors, aerators, chainsaws, hedge trimmers, bucket trucks, pole saws, blowers, and utility vehicles
  • Supports City events requiring ground preparation, set-up, breakdown, and restoration of park areas
  • Responds to storm events by performing debris removal, hazard mitigation, and emergency grounds restoration
  • Inspects parks and landscaped areas to ensure cleanliness, safety, and compliance with City appearance standards
  • Provides courteous customer service while interacting with residents, athletic leagues, contractors, and other City departments
  • Provides general direction, training, and technical assistance to lower level Maintenance Service Workers
  • Maintains daily logs
  • May set up for City functions and transport equipment
  • Participates in emergency callout rotation
  • Assists other Public Works divisions as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned and/or required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or GED; supplemented by a minimum of three (3) years’ general landscaping and tree maintenance experience in a public works or similar work environment including the use of standard hand tools, and operation of light and heavy power-driven equipment, trucks, and other vehicles; irrigation system experience is preferred.

A State of Florida Commercial Driver’s License, class B with air brake endorsement must be obtained within one (1) year of start date.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of South Florida turfgrass varieties, ornamental plants, shrubs, and trees
  • Skill in Microsoft Office products (Word and Outlook)
  • Skill in providing good customer service
  • Advanced skill in the use of light and heavy mechanical equipment
  • Ability to safely operate landscaping equipment including wide-area and zero-turn mowers, tractors, trimmers, chainsaws, aerators, and related power equipment.
  • Ability to work outdoors in extreme heat, humidity, and inclement weather.
  • Ability to read and follow work orders, plans, and written instructions.
  • Ability to use critical thinking skills to arrive at solutions and suggest improvements to processes
  • Ability to work at heights up to 50 feet in a bucket truck
  • Ability to clearly communicate and understand information in English, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Ability to regularly attend work and arrive punctually for designated work schedule

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Depending on functional area of assignment, tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work and may require occasional lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of heavy objects or materials (up to 80 pounds). Tasks that require moving objects of significant weight require the assistance of another person and/or use of proper techniques and moving equipment. Tasks may involve extended periods of time standing and/or walking.

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Tasks are regularly performed inside and/or outside with potential for exposure to adverse conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, fumes and/or poor ventilation, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature, and noise extremes, machinery and/or moving vehicles, vibrations, electric currents, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, gases or chemicals, oils and other cutting fluids, violence and/or disease, or pathogenic substances.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Some tasks require manual dexterity, in addition to visual and hearing acuity. Some tasks may involve identifying and distinguishing colors.

Eligibility List Criteria: An eligibility list shall be valid for six months (may be extended up to two years at the City's discretion), or until the list is abolished, whichever comes first. The list is formed based on applicants who meet the minimum qualifications. Applicants on the eligibility list will be given consideration for each vacancy. Veterans' Preference shall be awarded, pursuant to Florida Statutes.
