Job Title: Machinist
Location: Lansing, MI
Type of Role: Contract to Hire
Shift: 2nd Shift – 2:30 PM to 12:30 AM or 3:30 PM to 1:30 AM, Monday–Saturday (Sundays as needed)
Pay: up to $27.50/hr plus 7% shift premium
POSITION OVERVIEW:
We are seeking experienced CNC Machinists (2nd Shift) to support large-scale machining operations in an automotive tooling environment. This role is responsible for setting up and operating vertical and horizontal 3-axis and 5-axis milling machines to produce large die components. The ideal candidate has strong experience with large automotive mills, 5-axis machining, and G-code programming, and thrives in a precision-driven, non-production machining environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Set up and operate 3-axis and 5-axis CNC milling machines (vertical and horizontal)
- Machine large automotive tooling components such as hoods, doors, and fenders
- Generate and modify tool paths and G-code programs at the controller or via CAM systems
- Read and interpret blueprints, GD&T, SMIRT models, and technical specifications
- Select and secure work holding fixtures, tooling, and machine setups
- Monitor machining processes and adjust feeds, speeds, and cutting parameters
- Verify finished parts meet specifications and complete inspection documentation
- Maintain clean, safe, and organized work area (5S) and follow shop safety standards
- Collaborate with team members across shifts and departments to ensure production continuity
- Identify and support continuous improvement opportunities in machining processes
QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS):
- Journeyman CNC Machinist preferred or 4–5+ years of CNC machining experience
- Strong experience with large automotive mills (4–12 meters+)
- Must have experience with 5-axis machining (3+2 axis minimum)
- Experience with Fanuc, Heidenheim, Fidia, Mitsubishi, Okuma, or similar controllers
- Ability to read and interpret GD&T, blueprints, and machining specifications
- Experience programming at the machine controller and/or CAM systems
- Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with lifting, standing, and repetitive motion
- Must possess own tools (to a reasonable extent)
- Authorization to work in the United States
Additional Qualifications
- Experience machining large die components and automotive tooling
- Familiarity with SMIRT programming/software
- Experience with machines such as Parpas, Mitsubishi, Mechoff, Pratt, YCM, or Okuma
- Experience in defense or large fabrication machining environments
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet production schedules
- Strong communication skills for cross-shift and cross-department coordination
- Experience operating overhead cranes and forklifts
