Job Description

We are seeking a skilled Screw Machinist to operate multiple spindle screw machines equipped with automatic indexing and feeding mechanisms. The role involves performing turning, boring, threading, and facing operations on metal bar stock, analyzing specifications, and deciding on tooling based on knowledge of screw machine operations.

Responsibilities

  • Operate one or more previously set up multiple spindle screw machines to perform various operations on metal bar stock.
  • Study blueprints and plan sequence of operations.
  • Select cutting speeds, feed rates, depth of cuts, and cutting tools based on experience and knowledge of metal properties and shop mathematics.
  • Install collets, bushings, and stock pushers in stock-feeding mechanism.
  • Install and adjust cams, gears, and stops to control stock and tool movements at each station.
  • Position and secure tools in tool holders, verifying positions with gauges and other measuring instruments.
  • Move controls to set cutting speeds and feed rates.
  • Crank machine through cycle, stopping machine and adjusting tool positions and machine controls for timing, clearance, and chip removal.
  • Start machine, observe operation, and verify conformance to specifications using instruments such as plug and ring gauges, calipers, and micrometers.
  • Replace worn tools and instruct other workers.
  • May operate bench grinder to sharpen tools and set up and operate single spindle screw machine.

Essential Skills

  • Proficiency in screw machine operations.
  • Blueprint reading and plan sequencing.
  • Machine adjustment and tool positioning.
  • Experience with Davenport screw machines and related machining tools.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university (not required); or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Work Environment

The work environment involves frequent standing, reaching, and walking. You will be required to use your hands to work on machines and move materials. The manufacturing setting exposes you to elevated noise levels and machine lubrication oils for extended periods. The role includes moderate physical activity in overseeing machine operations, with occasional strenuous activity like lifting, pushing, and pulling. You will frequently bend and occasionally squat or kneel to repair or observe machines, with infrequent lifting of raw materials, pans of parts, and tooling.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $50.00/hr.
