Job Description

The Technician I role offers an opportunity to develop and apply foundational skills in structured cabling as a contributing member of a technical team. In this position, you install, route, terminate, and test low-voltage cabling and devices while learning to read prints, complete documentation, and follow industry standards and safety practices. This is an excellent entry-level role for someone with up to one year of experience in electrical or structured cabling who is eager to build a long-term career in the field.

Responsibilities

• Install work area outlets for floor monuments, modular furniture (such as surface mount boxes), and wall locations using appropriate hardware and methods.
• Drop cable down walls using fish tape or other approved methods and route cable through modular furniture pathways.
• Perform pre-termination procedures by organizing, forming, and dressing cables; determining proper length and slack; and labeling cables accurately.
• Suspend and support cable correctly using cable trays, J-hooks, D-rings, bridal rings, and trapeze supports in accordance with standards and best practices.
• Build telecommunications and network closets by mounting and installing backboards, cross-connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optic components, and related hardware.
• Install grounding for racks, equipment, and cabling as required to meet safety and performance standards.
• Perform fire-stopping procedures on fire-rated walls, including installing sleeves, pulling cable through sleeves, and properly sealing core penetrations.
• Terminate low-voltage devices and connections, including copper (Cat 5, Cat 6) and fiber optic terminations, following established termination and testing procedures.
• Follow construction and cabling prints, drawings, and documentation to ensure accurate installation and routing of all cabling and equipment.
• Perform termination testing on copper and fiber optic cabling to verify performance and compliance with specifications.
• Complete all required paperwork accurately and on time, including timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, tool transfers, and other project documentation.
• Follow safety guidelines and practices on job sites, including those covered by OSHA 10 training.
• Collaborate with other technicians and team members to meet project schedules and quality standards while maintaining a willingness to learn new skills.

Essential Skills

• Up to one (0–1) year of experience in electrical or structured cabling work.
• Basic knowledge of the construction industry and construction site practices.
• Mechanical aptitude and a strong willingness to learn new technical skills.
• Ability to install and route structured cabling, including pulling cable through walls and modular furniture.
• Ability to perform cable pre-termination tasks such as organizing, dressing, labeling, and managing slack.
• Ability to correctly support cabling using cable trays, J-hooks, D-rings, bridal rings, and trapeze supports.
• Ability to build and equip telecommunications closets, including mounting backboards, racks, patch panels, and related hardware.
• Ability to terminate low-voltage devices and cabling, including Cat 5 and Cat 6.
• Basic experience or aptitude with fiber optic cabling, including pulling and termination support.
• Understanding of or exposure to termination testing for copper and fiber optic cabling.
• Ability to follow prints and installation drawings with attention to detail.
• Strong organizational skills to complete paperwork such as timesheets, work orders, and material transfers accurately and on schedule.
• Commitment to following safety procedures and regulations, including OSHA 10 principles if certified.
• Reliable work habits and the ability to work effectively as part of a technical team.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• OSHA 10 certification or willingness to obtain OSHA 10 training.
• Prior hands-on experience with Cat 5, Cat 6, and fiber optic cabling in a construction or technical environment.
• Experience performing fire-stopping procedures and working with sleeves and core penetrations.
• Previous exposure to structured cabling standards and best practices.
• Basic familiarity with network closets, racks, patch panels, and grounding systems.
• Any vocational training or coursework related to electrical, low-voltage, or construction trades is a plus.

Work Environment

You work primarily on active construction and technical project sites, starting on a project in Ashburn, VA and transitioning to a project in Manassas, VA after approximately four weeks. The environment involves installing and supporting structured cabling infrastructure, including copper (Cat 5, Cat 6) and fiber optic systems, within buildings and telecommunications spaces. You regularly handle tools, ladders, and cabling support hardware, and you follow site safety practices and OSHA 10 guidelines where applicable. The role requires working in and around telecommunications closets, ceiling spaces, walls, and modular furniture systems in a field-based setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Chantilly, VA.

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $24.00/hr.

This is a fully onsite position in Chantilly,VA.
