Job Title: Logistics Engineer / Automation Implementation Engineer
Location: Onsite – Champaign, IL
Contract duration: 24 month contract with potential to extend or convert
Job Summary:
Seeking an experienced Logistics Engineer to support a large-scale warehouse automation transformation initiative. This role will focus on automation implementation, operational stabilization, logistics process improvement, and project coordination within a distribution and logistics environment. The engineer will work closely with operations, safety, contractors, vendors, and project leadership to ensure successful deployment and stabilization of automated systems.
Responsibilities:
Key Responsibilities
- Support logistics engineering activities for warehouse automation and material handling projects.
- Assist with automation implementation, commissioning, startup, and operational stabilization efforts.
- Coordinate and facilitate issue resolution with automation vendors, contractors, and internal stakeholders.
- Lead or participate in weekly project and operational review meetings.
- Support automation systems including ASRS (Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems), robotics, autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), and material flow technologies.
- Develop and maintain facility layouts, process flows, and engineering drawings using AutoCAD.
- Evaluate logistics processes and identify opportunities to improve safety, efficiency, throughput, and material flow.
- Assist with project planning, implementation schedules, risk mitigation, and change management activities.
- Support contractor management and procurement activities related to automation projects.
- Create reports, presentations, workflow diagrams, and project documentation.
- Collaborate with operations, engineering, safety, and leadership teams to deliver practical solutions.
- Monitor system performance after deployment and drive corrective actions when necessary.
- Participate in installation oversight, testing, validation, and go-live support activities.
- Analyze operational data and provide recommendations for continuous improvement.
- Maintain accurate project records and documentation throughout construction activities.
- Perform additional construction oversight and project support duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical field.
Experience
- 5–7 years of engineering experience.
- Experience supporting automation implementation projects within manufacturing, warehouse, logistics, or distribution environments.
- Experience with logistics process design, material flow optimization, or warehouse operations.
- Experience managing projects, vendors, contractors, or cross-functional initiatives.
Technical Skills
- Automation design and implementation experience.
- Logistics process design and continuous improvement.
- AutoCAD (2D drafting).
- Contractor management.
- Procurement and project coordination.
- Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, schematics, and technical documentation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with AutoStore or similar ASRS solutions.
- Warehouse and distribution center automation experience.
- Experience with robotics, AMRs, or automated material handling systems.
- AutoCAD 3D drafting/modeling experience.
- Experience supporting large-scale automation transformation projects.
- Strong change management and operational stabilization experience.
- Ability to influence cross-functional teams without direct authority.
