Under general supervision, the Lifeguard ensures the safety and well-being of all patrons using the UCC pool facilities by preventing and responding to emergencies. Lifeguards provide courteous, friendly, and professional customer service while maintaining a safe aquatic environment.

This position may also serve as a Swim Instructor, teaching lessons ranging from private instruction to group classes of varying sizes. Swim Instructors are responsible for delivering quality instruction, maintaining positive communication with participants and parents/guardians, and supporting a safe and encouraging learning environment.

Lifeguard:
  • Maintain continuous surveillance of pool patrons to ensure safety
  • Respond quickly and appropriately to aquatic emergencies and provide emergency care until medical personnel arrive
  • Enforce pool rules, regulations, and facility policies consistently
  • Provide courteous and professional customer service to patrons and guests
  • Complete required reports and documentation accurately and timely
  • Perform routine cleaning, maintenance, and custodial duties to maintain a safe facility
  • Monitor facility conditions and report safety or maintenance concerns
  • Attend required staff meetings, trainings, and in-service sessions
  • Assist with Water Safety Aide duties as assigned
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Aquatics Director or Head Lifeguards
Swim Instructor:
  • Teach swim lessons in accordance with American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor guidelines
  • Prepare and implement lesson plans appropriate to participant skill levels
  • Evaluate participant progress and provide instruction, feedback, and encouragement
  • Communicate participant progress with parents or guardians as appropriate
  • Complete required lesson records, reports, and certification paperwork
  • Maintain instructional equipment and clean teaching areas after use
  • Promote and enforce water safety practices during instruction
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of lifeguarding techniques, water safety practices, CPR/AED, First Aid, and emergency response procedures
  • Ability to remain calm, alert, and effective during emergencies
  • Ability to provide swim instruction to individuals of varying ages and skill levels
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with patrons, co-workers, and the public
  • Ability to communicate respectfully and effectively with individuals of diverse backgrounds and abilities
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and exercise good judgment in a public environment
Required Qualifications:
  • Must be at least 15 years old
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification required
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification required
  • Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification preferred for swim instruction duties
