The Canby Public Library is seeking a student to participate in a PAID Library Summer Internship! Whether you have career aspirations of working in a library setting or want to explore the opportunity to help find your passion, consider applying for this opportunity. The student selected will assist our Children's Librarian with the annual Summer Reading Program and gain insight into the inner workings of the Library by being a part of a variety of programs and projects.

Please note: To be considered, you must be a Junior or Senior attending Canby High School or enrolled in a Canby School District homeschool program and between 16-19 years old at the time of application. This position requires 110 hours to be worked between June to August and will be scheduled 10 hours per week with some flexibility.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervision is not a typical function assigned to this position.The individual in this position is expected to engage in the following work-related activities.
  • Assist with the annual Summer Reading Program
  • Work with the Children's Librarian on a variety of activities and outreach to the community.
  • Work closely with Library staff to learn about various positions in the organization and how they support each other.
  • Assist customers with library questions, program participation, and computer support.
  • Craft a meaningful library project, which will be completed through the course of the Internship.
  • Planning and coordinating project milestones and identifying project resources.
  • Documenting and presenting project outcomes and learning.
  • Be comfortable sharing successes, challenges, and opportunities through a prepared presentation.
  • Work collaboratively with people from all backgrounds.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be a Junior or Senior attending Canby High School or enrolled in a Canby School District homeschool program
  • and between 16-19 years old.
  • Any satisfactory combination of education, experience, and training that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the above duties.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual (Spanish) fluency is preferred.
Mental effort
Normal concentration and attention to detail with normal deadlines.

Physical effort
Minimal: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility. Duties involve moving materials weighing up to 10 pounds on a regular basis such as files, books, office equipment, etc., and may infrequently require moving materials weighing up to 25 pounds. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while operating equipment such as computer keyboard, calculator, and standard office equipment.

Work environment
Everyday Risks/Discomforts: Usual office working conditions. The noise level in the work area is typical of most office environments with telephones, personal interruptions, and background noises.

Travel requirements
Local travel to Summer Reading Program locations.

Hours required
This intern grant requires 110 hours to be worked between June to August (10 hours per week). Some evening or weekend hours may be required.

Additional Information:

Final candidates will be subject to a criminal background check and reference checks as part of the contingent employment offer process. Certain positions at the City of Canby will also require a drug screen.

Within three days of hire, you will be required to complete the US Department of Homeland Security’s I-9 verification process confirming authorization to work in the United States.
