This second-shift position performs a wide range of semi-skilled to master-level maintenance and repair work across mechanical systems, equipment, and building interiors and exteriors for the Central Library and its neighborhood branches. Work is performed under the leadership of the Library Maintenance Coordinator and requires significant independence, sound judgment in diagnosing issues, determining repair methods, and coordinating with vendors or contractors as needed. Responsibilities include general facility maintenance such as carpentry, painting, plumbing, basic electrical repairs, equipment upkeep, custodial duties, and emergency response. Employees also support exterior building care, including graffiti removal, snow and lawn maintenance, supply deliveries, furniture cleaning and repair, and other assigned tasks.
Note: This position is trainee-eligible, and applicants who meet trainee-level qualifications are encouraged to apply. Trainees participate in a structured training and career progression program that includes classroom and on-the-job learning designed to support advancement from Facility Maintenance Worker 1 to Maintenance Mechanic 1. Initial placement in the trainee progression is based on training and experience at hire. Trainees are expected to complete the full program within two (2) years, after which the position is reclassified to Maintenance Mechanic 1 upon successful completion.

- Two years of varied custodial and semi-skilled building maintenance and repair work.

Two (2) years of experience applying the following:- Building maintenance and custodial practices and procedures, and the tools, equipment, supplies, and materials common to this work.
- Computer software applicable to the duties of the position, including Microsoft 365.

To be hired as a Maintenance Mechanic 1:- Three (3) years of experience in skilled building and mechanical repair work, or mechanical experience, or as a journeyperson in a related trade; AND
- Directly related training in applicable electrical, welding, or plumbing skills.
-OR-
- One (1) year of experience in semi-skilled or skilled building and mechanical, or technician repair work, including at least six (6) months of formal trade work; AND
- Associate's degree in Industrial Maintenance/Mechanics or related field.
Other combinations of training and/or experience which can be demonstrated to result in the possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of these positions will also be considered.
