This is a full-time position located at theState Library in Baton Rouge, LA.

This librarian functions as a General Reference Librarian in the Reference Department, reporting to the Head of Reference. This position requires the incumbent to provide direct public service at the reference desk and have knowledge of basic reference sources, both print and electronic. This librarian takes part in the instructional initiatives of the Reference Department, including planning, implementing, and integrating social networking tools and other educational technologies into the Reference Department's services. In addition, this librarian plans, coordinates, and presents searching and reference training and workshops for staff of Louisiana public libraries, state employees and officials, and State Library staff. This position requires knowledge and experience using additional and electronic reference resources; excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; and the ability to train others in acquiring basic library skills. This position requires knowledge of collection development theory and practice, the State Library collection, and information needs of the state employees, elected officials, and Louisiana public and institutional libraries. This librarian also performs other duties as assigned. Duties are performed with minimal supervision.

Job Duties:

  • Uses the library's collection of books, periodicals, pamphlets, government documents, and online sources to reply to requests received from Louisiana public and institutional libraries, and from state officials and employees.
  • Provides reference assistance in person, over the telephone, and via electronic means such as email and chat.
  • Provides assistance to patrons in the use of computers and associated technology.
  • Provides reference assistance in response to correspondence from the incarcerated.
  • Provides in-depth research assistance to patrons who have set up appointments.
  • Designs, develops, coordinates, and presents training programs on reference skills, the use of electronic resources, and emerging resources for librarians and patrons.
  • Presents workshops and training sessions for Louisiana public library staff, state employees, and officials, etc.
  • Conducts collection tours as requested.
  • Creates displays for materials in the library collection to promote their use.
  • Manages assigned sections of the collection, including the selection of new materials, and de-selection and withdrawal of materials in accordance with the Collection Development Policy.
  • Assists in the selection and evaluation of electronic resources.
  • Manages the Federal Document Depository Collection in accordance with all published rules and procedures.
  • Keeps current by reading the literature in the field.
  • Attends and participates in professional meetings, conferences, workshops, and webinars.
  • Prepares and delivers conference presentations as requested.



Position-Specific Details:

  • Appointment Type: This is a probational appointment. Current permanent status state employees may be required to accept a probational appointment.
  • Work Schedule: This is a full-time position that reports in-office. This position may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or overtime. This position may be required to travel.
  • Career Progression:This position may be filled from this recruitment as a Librarian 1, 2, or 3 based on the qualifications of the selected applicant.
