The Leak Inspector performs field-based inspections of utility-owned gas meters at residential and commercial properties to help prevent gas leaks and ensure public safety. This entry-level role requires strong professionalism, mechanical aptitude, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work independently in all weather conditions while traveling throughout the assigned utility territory.
Responsibilities
You will contribute directly to a high-impact public safety initiative that helps prevent gas leaks and potential explosions, providing meaningful work with a clear purpose. The role offers strong growth potential through multi-year inspection and deployment programs, creating opportunities for upward mobility and advancement into larger, more complex projects. You will join a team that emphasizes safety, training, and development, with structured classroom instruction, certification, and field mentoring to support your success. The organization values long-term career paths, professional growth in the utility sector, and the chance to build a stable, field-based career with expanding opportunities in a growing metro region.
Work Environment
This is a 100% field-based position that requires daily travel within the assigned utility territory, with regular tailboard meetings held at warehouse locations in Hartford and New Haven. Standard operating hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with optional Saturday shifts available at the supervisor’s request and at the employee’s discretion. The work involves visiting multiple addresses each day, receiving routes via a handheld tablet, and working largely independently in residential and commercial settings. You will work outdoors and indoors in all weather conditions, frequently walking several miles, climbing stairs and ladders, and remaining on your feet for most of the day. The company provides a simple tool set, including a flashlight, gas detector, field binder for paperwork, ID badges, tools and tool belt, and a handheld tablet. Flame-resistant shirts and pants, safety vests, and hard hats are supplied as part of the required safety attire. New hires complete a structured training program that includes OSHA and orientation on day one, followed by classroom training, homework, practice exams, certification testing, and job shadowing in the field. The first 90 days serve as a probationary period, during which performance, homework completion, and field competency are closely evaluated.
