Job Title: Leak Inspector
Job Description

The Leak Inspector performs field-based inspections of utility-owned gas meters at residential and commercial properties to help prevent gas leaks and ensure public safety. This entry-level role requires strong professionalism, mechanical aptitude, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work independently in all weather conditions while traveling throughout the assigned utility territory.

Responsibilities

  • Perform periodic facility inspections and surveys on utility-owned gas meters at customer locations.
  • Conduct integrity surveys, including direct assessments and close interval surveys, in accordance with established procedures.
  • Complete all required documentation accurately and thoroughly using both paper-based and electronic systems.
  • Ensure all readings, records, and reports comply with company procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Support the successful completion of regulatory audits and inspections by providing accurate records and field information.
  • Perform audit reviews with operations teams and support them during internal and external audits.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with customers when entering homes and properties to explain the inspection process.
  • Follow all safety protocols, including those outlined in training and the company handbook, during all field activities.
  • Use provided tools and equipment, such as gas detectors and handheld tablets, to complete inspections and record data.
  • Manage daily work routes obtained from a tablet and remain self-sufficient and organized throughout the day.
  • Interface with technical services, government agencies, emergency planning committees, emergency responders, landowners, contractors, and other stakeholders as needed.
  • Participate fully in required training, complete all homework and practice exams on personal time, and successfully pass certification exams.
  • Maintain reliable attendance, communicate promptly with supervision regarding sick time and scheduling, and adhere to company expectations during the probationary period.
  • Walk several miles per day, climb stairs and ladders, and work on your feet for an entire 8-hour shift in various weather conditions.
Essential Skills
  • Valid state driver’s license and reliable vehicle; at least 1 year of driving experience.
  • Ability to enter customers’ homes and represent the company in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to explain work clearly to customers and colleagues.
  • Demonstrated reliability, professionalism, and consistent job history.
  • Mechanical aptitude, with experience or familiarity in areas such as cable technology, HVAC, piping, or auto mechanics considered a plus.
  • Ability to walk several miles per day, climb stairs and ladders, and remain on your feet for an 8-hour workday in all weather conditions.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic to intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to complete documentation accurately.
  • Ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and effectively as part of a team.
  • Intermediate knowledge of mathematics and algebra, along with demonstrated mechanical aptitude.
  • Customer service orientation, with the ability to interact respectfully and effectively with the public.
  • Valid driver’s license with the ability to drive company vehicles or move company vehicles when required.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience in inspection, construction, general labor, or related field-based roles.
  • Background or exposure to mechanical trades such as HVAC, piping, cable installation, or automotive work.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and initiative, with the ability to take ownership of assigned routes and tasks.
  • Experience interfacing with technical services, government agencies, emergency responders, and contractors.
  • Comfort working with handheld tablets and digital tools to receive routes and record inspection data.
  • Ability to follow structured training programs, including classroom sessions, homework, practice exams, and certification testing.
  • Willingness to participate in a probationary period focused on performance, homework completion, and field competency.
  • Professional demeanor and the ability to maintain composure and safety focus in a variety of environments and conditions.

Work Environment

This is a 100% field-based position that requires daily travel within the assigned utility territory, with regular tailboard meetings held at warehouse locations in Hartford and New Haven. Standard operating hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with optional Saturday shifts available at the supervisor’s request and at the employee’s discretion. The work involves visiting multiple addresses each day, receiving routes via a handheld tablet, and working largely independently in residential and commercial settings. You will work outdoors and indoors in all weather conditions, frequently walking several miles, climbing stairs and ladders, and remaining on your feet for most of the day. The company provides a simple tool set, including a flashlight, gas detector, field binder for paperwork, ID badges, tools and tool belt, and a handheld tablet. Flame-resistant shirts and pants, safety vests, and hard hats are supplied as part of the required safety attire. New hires complete a structured training program that includes OSHA and orientation on day one, followed by classroom training, homework, practice exams, certification testing, and job shadowing in the field. The first 90 days serve as a probationary period, during which performance, homework completion, and field competency are closely evaluated.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Watertown, CT.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.
