EMPLOYMENT TERMS:Full-time, 12-month position
PRIMARY DUTY:The Lead Nurse serves as Clinic Supervisor for Wellness Services and provides direct patient care as a Registered Nurse within Northwest Missouri State University’s integrated wellness model. This position combines clinical practice with nursing leadership to support safe, high-quality, student-centered healthcare aligned with collegiate health best practices.The Lead Nurse oversees clinical aspects of daily operations, including supervision and development of nursing staff and student clinical personnel, coordination of clinical workflows, and implementation of evidence-informed practice standards. The role ensures compliance with regulatory and public health requirements while promoting professional development, cultural competency, and effective team-based care.
As the clinical subject-matter expert for immunization compliance, tuberculosis screening, infectious disease surveillance, and public health response, the Lead Nurse collaborates with campus and community partners to support student health and institutional compliance. As a member of the Wellness Services leadership team, this position contributes to quality improvement, clinical preparedness, and strategic planning to meet the evolving needs of students and align with institutional priorities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Provide professional nursing care within an ambulatory college health setting, including clinical assessment, triage, treatment support, and patient education consistent with established protocols and scope of practice.
2. Oversee clinical nursing operations to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery of services aligned with collegiate health best practices and regulatory standards.
3. Oversee and ensure nursing staff maintain active licensure, required certifications, and ongoing professional development, including continuing education, CPR/BLS certification, bloodborne pathogen and infection control training, clinical competency validation, and other mandatory trainings necessary to support safe practice and compliance with institutional, regulatory, and professional standards.
4. Hire, supervise, mentor, and evaluate nursing staff, student clinical employees, and clinical interns, including performance management and professional development planning.
5. Coordinate nursing schedules to ensure adequate coverage of clinic at all times.
6. Coordinate clinical workflows and support effective team-based care, ensuring clear communication, collaboration, and continuity of services across providers and clinical staff.
7. Lead training and professional development initiatives for nursing staff to promote clinical competency, cultural responsiveness, effective communication, and preparedness for routine and emergency clinical situations.
8. Serve as the clinical subject-matter expert for immunization requirements, tuberculosis screening protocols, and other public health compliance standards, providing guidance to staff and leadership.
9. Oversee clinical response to public health concerns, including infectious disease surveillance, required reporting processes, and participation in local, state, and national health initiatives or grant-funded programs.
10. Manage clinical supply and medication inventory processes, ensuring appropriate equipment, materials, and access to necessary diagnostic and laboratory services.
11. Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with campus partners, public health agencies, and community healthcare providers to support integrated student health services.
12. Participate in continuous quality improvement activities related to clinical care, patient safety, and service effectiveness.
13. Support development and implementation of clinical policies, procedures, and protocols in collaboration with clinical leadership and administrative partners.
14. Maintain active engagement in divisional and institutional initiatives as needed to support integrated wellness services and student success outcomes.
15. Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
· Associate or Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (ADN or BSN) from an accredited program.
License/Certification:
· Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Missouri (or eligibility for licensure).
· Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or equivalent CPR certification.
Experience:
· 3 years clinical RN experience in outpatient or ambulatory setting
· Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience or similar experience
WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in a healthcare facility between hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm with a hour lunch break. This position does require occasional evening and weekend work.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position supervises staff nurses, prn nurses, student employees, and student internship program.
EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS USED: Computer, fax, copier, diagnostic equipment, electronic medical record system
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires extended periods of time standing and walking, ability to move quickly and sustain high energy in a fast-paced work environment; ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
