Resumes may be attached but will not be accepted in lieu of a complete, detailed application. PURPOSE:Under general supervision, performs a variety of maintenance and minor construction in the upkeep of the City's parks, streets and buildings; and performs related duties as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:A Lead Maintenance Worker is the advanced level class
in the Public Works series.Incumbents of this class are expected to perform the full range of supervision of Maintenance Workers; train lower-level employees; maintain records; evaluate the performance of crew members; and perform advanced level maintenance work. Incumbents whose positions are allocated to this series are assigned duties in streets, parks and building maintenance work.
Due to the nature of construction and maintenance work, incumbents are expected to perform work at lower-level classifications when there is insufficient work at their assigned level. Incumbents may be assigned work at a higher level for training purposes for limited periods of time.
Supervision Received and Exercised:Incumbents work with limited supervision and exercise extensive independent judgment to ensure the upkeep of the City's parks, streets and buildings.
Employees in this class typically report to the Public Works Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Specific duties will depend upon work assignment. - Leads and participates in the maintenance of parks, streets, and city buildings.
- Participates in scheduling, assigning, directing and evaluating the work of assigned personnel.
- Instructs and provides training for personnel in the use of equipment, supplies and safe work practices.
- Receives work orders, determines order and priority of work completion and assigns accordingly; inspects and monitors city streets, parks and buildings for necessary maintenance work to assure safety, resolve problems or notify others as appropriate.
- Works with outside contractors to obtain quotes for maintenance work, purchasing equipment, tools and supplies.
- Attends meetings with administrators from various departments.
- Maintains records of work orders, schedules and equipment repair.
- Responds to emergency situations as necessary.
- Performs related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:- Practices and techniques of employee lead supervision, including selection, training, work evaluation and discipline, safe work methods and safety practices pertaining to the work.
- Basic civil engineering techniques used in construction, maintenance and repair of streets, city parks and irrigation systems.
- Construction drawings and blueprints.
- Construction tools, equipment and materials.
- Motor vehicle laws.
- Operation of light to heavy equipment used in construction, repair and maintenance of streets and parks.
- Operation of light to moderately heavy construction and maintenance equipment.
- Principles of propagating and maintaining trees, shrubs, flowers and turf.
- Tools, materials, procedures and equipment used in street and sidewalk maintenance and repair work.
Ability to:- Plan, estimate, coordinate and schedule the work of a crew.
- Maintain City parks, roadways, traffic lights, storm drains, buildings and other City owned facilities.
- Supervise, train and review the work of assigned personnel.
- Prepare and maintain a variety of basic written records and reports.
- Perform a variety of difficult and complex gardening, park, street and building maintenance work.
- Read and interpret work plans and blueprints.
- Perform activities requiring strength and agility.
- Work at heights and in close quarters; operate moderately heavy power grounds, street repair and building maintenance equipment.
- Perform heavy manual labor.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with employees, the public and others encountered in the course of work.
- Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Experience:Five (5) years of experience performing maintenance work, extensive physical labor, or related qualifying experience, with at least two (2) of these years at the Maintenance Worker II level in the City or equivalent lead experience.
Education:Graduation from high school or possession of GED.
Licenses, Registrations, Accreditation, etc.:Possession of a valid Class B California Motor Vehicle Operators License at time of appointment.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, incumbents must possess above average hand/eye coordination and above average strength and the ability to lift, carry, push and pull items in excess of 100 lbs. Hazardous conditions such as heavy equipment, power tools, heavy materials, jagged edges, overhead and underground power lines, insects, snakes and rodents, and caustic materials may be encountered.
Mental Demands
While performing the duties of this job, an employee requires heavy physical labor and the ability to perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled crafts; ability to concentrate for extended periods while perform skilled crafts and maintain a constant awareness of safety hazards and potential danger.
