Solid Waste Disposal | York, SCWe are excited to hire a full-time, non-exempt Lead Heavy Equipment Operator with the York County Landfill. The purpose of this position is to operate and supervise the operation of a variety of heavy equipment in support of York County Solid Waste Disposal; to maintain and perform minor repairs on equipment and machinery, and to perform related work as required.
Schedule:The Landfill hours of operation are Monday - Friday 7 am - 4 pm and Saturday 7 am - noon. The schedule includes work hours on some Saturdays and holidays based on operational needs.
Projected Salary Range/Pay Grade 113:$22.49 - $26.99 per hour. Salary is determined based on qualifications.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
- Assists in supervising and performs a variety of maintenance tasks using vehicles, heavy equipment and machinery, including but not limited to grading and paving, scraping roads, constructing and patching roads, mending fences, installing asphalt or concrete, placing stone, landscaping, sowing grass and mowing grass on rights-of-way, cutting and removing trees and debris from rights-of-way, installing road signs, digging ditches, laying drainage pipes, hauling waste, etc.
- Assists in supervising and operates a variety of light and heavy equipment, commercial vehicles/truck and hand tools; exercises care and safety in the use and maintenance of assigned equipment and tools; operates two-way radio.
- Operates heavy vehicles and equipment to load, haul or move materials, dirt and debris; drives a truck to transport heavy equipment from site to site as well as materials and tools. Ability to drive county vehicles required to perform this essential task.
- Performs preventive maintenance, cleaning and minor repairs of equipment, machinery and tools; inspects equipment regularly for proper and safe operating condition.
- Responds to after-hours emergency calls as required; works on call for duty in inclement weather conditions and on holidays as necessary.
- Performs duties in accordance with all division policies, procedures, and standards of quality and safety.
- Prepares and submits daily and monthly work reports.
- Attends training, and workshops as required to enhance job knowledge and skills.
- Manages inventory, property, or loss control; responsible for tools and equipment used by the employees.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
- Five (5) years of experience as a heavy equipment operator or related field or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Certifications and Licenses:
- Must possess and maintain a valid state Class A, Commercial driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
- Must possess CPR / FIRST AID, OSHA Training (Competent Person, Confined Space, and Excavation and Trenching) or the ability to obtain.

Physical Demands: Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.- Performs heavy work that involves constantly lifting, shoveling, and carrying 35 to 50 pounds on a regular and recurring basis and exerting 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
