Lead Broadcast Engineer

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:


Collaborate, partner, and train alongside the larger Engineering team to achieve the following goals:


  • Project Commissioning & Collaboration: Collaborate with Pac-12 engineering, 3rd-party clients, and systems integrator teams to commission Production Control Rooms (PCRs), Audio Control Rooms (ACRs), Tape rooms, and related facilities.
  • On-Campus Infrastructure Support: Maintain occasional presence at 3rd-party clients in other Bay Area locations to provide hands-on engineering support for venue-based production infrastructure and local campus workflows. This includes the physical troubleshooting, maintenance, and optimization of broadcast systems within campus venues to ensure seamless execution of live productions.
  • Support live events independently.
  • Perform various broadcast engineering support duties for all live SR Enterprises broadcasts as first-line support for Production, Post-Production, Transmission, and Media Management teams.
  • Participate in installation, configuration, troubleshooting, technical support, and repair of broadcast technologies, television production, and IT equipment.


Requirements:


Foundational Qualifications

  • Education & Experience: Minimum of one year of experience within a professional engineering or broadcast maintenance environment, or a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Broadcast/Communications Technology, or a related technical field.
  • Industry Knowledge: In-depth understanding of IP technology principles and core broadcast engineering standards.
  • Communication & Presence: Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to maintain a consistent on-campus presence to support venue-based infrastructure.


Technical Expertise (Broadcast & IP)

  • Signal Transport & CODECs: Proficiency in (or the ability to master) hardware and cloud-based CODECs (e.g., Nevion, Evertz, Haivision, AWS Elemental) utilizing protocols such as J2K, H.264, HEVC, HLS, RTMP, RTP-FEC, SRT, RIST, and ZIXI.
  • Production Infrastructure: Expertise in managing and troubleshooting Production Control Room (PCR) and studio systems, including video routing, switchers, audio consoles, intercoms, graphics, and studio automation.
  • Workflow Systems: Experience in the setup, configuration, and support of file-based workflow systems, Media Asset Management (MAM), and Remote Integration (REMI) production models.


Systems & Network Administration

  • Networking Fundamentals: Practical skills in router and switch configuration, as well as network diagnostics using tools like traceroute, ping, and nmap.
  • Server Administration: Foundational knowledge of Linux and Windows Server environments.
  • Cloud Services: Working exposure to core AWS services, specifically S3, EC2, and CloudFront.


Operational Tools & Standards

  • Documentation & Design: Proficiency in AutoCAD for technical system documentation.
  • Project Management: Experience utilizing Jira, Confluence, or similar platforms for task tracking and technical documentation.
  • Collaboration Suites: Fluent in Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Calendar) for departmental coordination.


Physical & Scheduling Demands

  • Physical Ability: Capacity to lift and maneuver A/V equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Availability: Must be available for 24/7 emergency response, on-call rotations, and weekend support for onsite live events.

Operational Availability & Physical Demands

  • Event & Emergency Support: Flexibility to work weekends and remain on-call 24/7 to provide immediate technical support for escalated issues during live broadcasts.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to safely lift, transport, and install Audio/Visual and networking equipment weighing up to 50 pounds in various field and studio environments.

  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Broadcast Engineering, Communications Technology, or a related technical field is preferred
