The Alameda City Attorney's Office seeks one or more part-time prosecutor/trial attorney to join its Prosecution team under the City job classificationLaw Fellowor Staff Counsel. The position is located within the City Attorney's Office.
Compensation RangesLaw Fellow: $61.24 - $90.48 hourlyStaff Counsel:$92.33 - $112.22 hourly
The Prosecution and Public Rights Unit represents the People of the State of California in prosecuting misdemeanor criminal matters, such as child/elder abuse, domestic violence, assault/battery, DUI, theft, and weapons charges. City prosecutors are dedicated to promoting and improving public safety and the quality of life in Alameda, through the fair, compassionate and effective administration of justice.

This attorney will be expected to handle the full range of prosecutorial responsibilities, including but not limited to, arraignments, pre-trial, discovery, motion practice, hearings, and trials. Court appearances are expected to be made in criminal courtrooms at the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse in Oakland. Attorneys having interest and passion for criminal prosecution work are encouraged to apply, regardless of experience. This position is currently established as a part-time position, which generally limits working hours, on average, to be 28 hours a week or less over a one-year period, exclusive of vacation, sick and other leave time. Part time positions receive sick leave, but do not receive any other benefits (such as medical insurance, vacation, holiday pay and retirement benefits).

  1. Performslegalresearchanddraft various motions.
  2. Make appearances in criminal courtrooms at various stages of the criminal process, such as arrangements, motions, trials, and appeals.
  3. Conduct necessary investigations, including interviewing/preparing percipient witnesses, law enforcement personnel and experts.
  4. Support and/or conduct trials and/or appeals.
Any combination equivalent to education and experience likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education:
Equivalent to a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.

Experience:
Law Fellow: Membership in good standing with the State Bar of California.Staff Counsel: Minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience performing legal work including experience in a principal or lead capacity.

Knowledge
Knowledge of legal principles and practices including civil, criminal and administrative laws and procedures; judicial procedures and rules of evidence; methods of legal research; law and practices related to municipal government; principles and practices of public administration.
Ability
Ability to effectively handle the duties as describedabove.

Other Requirements
Possession of a valid California Driver's License and satisfactory driving record at the time of appointment is required as a condition of initial and continued employment only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than the employee's ability to get to/from various work locations in a timely manner, is necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.
