PARKS LABORER (FULL-TIME)

Multiple Positions Available

Available Shifts:

  1. Wednesday – Sunday, 2:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

  1. Wednesday – Sunday (Approximately April 15 – August 15) &

Monday – Friday (Approximately August 16 – April 14)

6:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. (Days Off Vary Based on Time of Year)

2026 Wage Scale: Starting Rate of Pay $24.50/Hour, $26.77 after 6 months,

$28.97 after 12 months,$31.28 after 18 months, $33.60 after 24 months

Applications are being accepted for the Parks Laborer position. Applications received during this process will also be used to create an eligibility list that will be used to fill any additional vacancies that may occur in the Parks Laborer position in the next twelve months.

Employees in this job classification are members of the AFSCME Union.

Canton Township is a reciprocal unit as defined in the

Possession of Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Group B with Endorsement N, or temporary Group B with Endorsement N from the State of Michigan is required at the time of job offer. JOB DESCRIPTION

LEISURE SERVICES LABORER

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

This is manual labor work in a variety of parks operations and grounds maintenance. An employee in this classification may perform a variety of structural and grounds maintenance work at Township parks and properties. Duties and responsibilities include general grounds cleaning, installing, and repairing park structures and equipment, and performing a variety of tasks in the operations and maintenance of the division. Work is normally performed under direct supervision; however, routine or repetitive tasks may be performed without supervision once they are learned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION: (Note: These examples are intended merely as illustrations of the various types of work performed)

  • Operates a power mower, truck, tractor, chain saws, rototillers, aerators, hedgers, spreaders, edgers, air compressors, power lifts, and other equipment.
  • Assists in the grounds maintenance of township owned parks and facilities.
  • Performs routine manual labor such as digging holes; shoveling snow; salting parking lots and sidewalks; and loading trucks.
  • Performs general grounds keeping duties.
  • Assist with set up of special events using power equipment.
  • Provide playground equipment and grounds maintenance.
  • Maintains positive relations with the community and public.
  • Establishes effective working relationships with Township staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Working knowledge of hand and power tools and ability to use those tools properly and safely.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time, often under adverse climatic conditions.
  • Ability to do continuous bending and lifting of up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to operate a tractor, power mower and other power equipment.
  • Ability to drive a van or truck.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and establish good working relationships with the public and other employees.
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or its equivalent; or any combination of experience and training which will provide the minimum qualifications.
  • Must possess a current, valid Michigan Drivers License with a driving history that does not create liability concerns; which includes, but not limited to, convictions for reckless driving, careless driving, suspended license, or convictions involving drinking and impaired driving.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATION:

Possession of Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Group B with Endorsement N, or temporary Group B with Endorsement N from the State of Michigan at the time of job offer. Must successfully pass the road test for the Group B, at applicant's own expense, within 180 days after employment with Canton Township.

Wednesday, April 29, 2026 - Timed Written Test

  1. Qualified candidates who are selected to advance to the next step in the hiring process will be scheduled to take a timed basic competency written exam on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at 1:30 p.m.
  2. This will be a general competency-timed written examination, and there is no designated study guide.
  3. Candidates must score a minimum of 70% on the timed written exam to be considered further.
  4. Testing accommodations must be requested in advance by contacting Human Resources at 734-394-5251.

Tuesday, May 5, 2026 - Interview Schedules Emailed to Select Candidates

  1. Applicants selected for the interview will be notified via email no later than Tuesday, May 5, 2026.

  3. Candidates must confirm their attendance by responding to the email.
