JOB TITLE:
Laboratory Technician III
JOB PURPOSE:
Manage the operations of designated infectious disease research laboratories; perform advanced diagnostic/research tests with complex analysis and interpretation of data; train and supervise undergraduate and graduate students.
This position is grant funded and considered at-will employment.
This position has been deemed essential as addressed in the University of Wyoming’s Employee Handbook. Employees in essential positions may be required to work during emergency closures and winter closures based on the nature of their job duties and the reasons for the closure.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Management of daily operations to include oversite of ongoing experiments, compliance with safety requirements, training undergraduate and graduate students. Documentation, maintaining and developing standard operating procedures (SOPs), ordering laboratory reagents & supplies using a p-card, and purchasing orders. Management of laboratory inventory including materials/supplies and samples. Storage & disposal of hazardous waste and chemicals. Biocontainment Facility: work in a Tier 1 BSL-3 facility to study pathogenic viruses and bacteria, including Select Agents. Bacterial culture, identification and sensitivity on animal specimens. Bacterial DNA extraction, PCR, qPCR. Perform immunological assays (ELISAs, virus neutralization tests, flow cytometry, etc). Perform protein-based assays (Western blots, ELISAs, etc). Maintain cell culture and viral propagation/testing methods. Assist with animal studies including husbandry and collection of samples.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
Maintain equipment & records. Complete laboratory forms, reports, and purchase laboratory supplies. Participate in method development and research project design(s). Maintain backups for bacteriology/virology data. Assist with the preparation of class material.
COMPETENCIES:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor’s degree
Experience: 2 years work-related experience in a veterinary or medical diagnostic laboratory or equivalent experience in a research laboratory. Experience working with infectious agents, specifically bacteria and/or viruses.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience and training in human or veterinary microbiology. Experience in assay development. Previous BSL3 laboratory experience and ability to obtain and maintain Select Agent Tier 1 clearance to work in BSL3 laboratories. Experience in assisting with animal studies.
