Open Until FilledGENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Wyoming Department of Health, Chemical Testing Program, seeks an experienced Forensic Toxicologist (Scientist II) to work with a team of scientists conducting high-complexity tests for licit and illicit compounds in human biological samples. The scope of work includes using advanced mass spectrometry techniques (e.g., QToF, LC/MS/MS, and Headspace GC) to identify drugs of abuse in complex matrices.
In addition to primary analytical duties, this position serves as a Quality Assurance (QA) liaison, providing technical support for the program's quality management system by reviewing SOPs for consistency and assisting with method validations. This role requires advanced knowledge in chemistry and the ability to exercise independent judgment when interpreting results with significant legal implications.

- Analytical Testing: Analyze human biological samples utilizing complex analytical instrumentation, including Quadrupole Time of Flight (QToF), LC/MS/MS, and Headspace GC.
- Sample Preparation: Utilize automated extraction platforms (e.g., Biotage Extrahera, Beckman Coulter Biomek i5) and manual positive pressure extraction units.
- QA Support: Serve as a program liaison for quality initiatives by reviewing technical SOPs for best-practice consistency and assisting in directing method validations aligned with ANSI/ASB Standard 036.
- Technical Review: Perform secondary review of results generated by other scientists to ensure data interpretation is 100% accurate and the legal chain of custody is maintained.
- Expert Testimony: Provide pre-trial consultation and expert courtroom testimony, conveying technical knowledge regarding the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs and alcohol.
- Field Certifications: Perform annual certification checks and repairs on breath alcohol instrumentation (Intoximeter ECIR.ii and .iit) in the laboratory and throughout the state.
- Instrumentation Maintenance: Perform preventative maintenance and troubleshooting on complex analytical equipment to ensure operational readiness.
PREFERENCES:Bachelor’s Degree in Toxicology, At least 1 year of experience in Forensic Toxicology and Completed the Indiana University Alcohol Borkenstein Course within the last 3 years.
KNOWLEDGE:- Advanced knowledge of Forensic Toxicology, including the pharmacology (pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics) and physiology of drugs and alcohol.
- Familiarity with ANSI/ASB Standard 036 and the principles of forensic method validation.
- Proficiency in Analytical Chemistry and qualitative/quantitative analysis of complex biological matrices.
- Strong knowledge of quality assurance practices in analytical laboratories.
- Strong technical writing skills for the production of clear, accurate SOPs and reports.
- Knowledge of laboratory quality control assurance practices, safety, and hazardous material control.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Education:Bachelor's Degree (typically in Science)
Experience:0-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in a medical or environmental laboratory) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Laboratory Scientist I
OREducation & ExperienceSubstitution:4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in a medical or environmental laboratory) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Laboratory Scientist I
